Kickback happens when a blade binds, twists, or is pinched—often because the kerf closes around it—and the saw or workpiece moves suddenly. The movement depends on the saw: a table saw can throw the workpiece back toward the operator, while a handheld circular saw or chainsaw can move toward the operator. Reduce the risk by supporting the material, keeping the right guards and controls in place, and following the manual for your specific saw.
What causes kickback?
During a cut, the kerf—the opening made by the blade—can close and pinch the blade. Binding, twisting, or misalignment can also trap the blade and trigger sudden movement. WOOD Magazine identifies pinching as the most common culprit in its kickback safety guidance. The hazard is not identical across saws: on a table saw, the workpiece may be driven back; with a handheld circular saw or chainsaw, the saw may move toward the operator.
How to reduce kickback on a table saw
Ripping boards
- Stand slightly to the outside edge of the board rather than directly in its line.
- Use a push stick when feeding stock by hand, and do not pull the workpiece from behind the saw.
- Keep the splitter in place to help keep the kerf open, and leave the anti-kickback pawls installed.
- Support the stock throughout the cut so it does not sag or shift.
Cutting large panels
Large sheets can sag under their own weight, which may close the kerf and pinch the blade. Set them on broad, stable support, such as a workbench or a well-made stand with rollers, so the panel remains supported through the cut. Choose compatible accessories and support equipment for the saw and material; a splitter, insert, push stick, or pawl serves a different role, and none eliminates the need for a stable setup and safe feeding.
How to reduce kickback with a handheld circular saw
Support and secure the work so it cannot shift or sag into the blade. Keep your hands and body to one side of the cut line, hold the saw firmly, and avoid reaching from an awkward or unbalanced position. If the blade binds, do not pull a running saw backward through the cut. The Black & Decker CS144/CS180 manual gives that warning for those specific cordless saw models and also advises firm control and secure work support; consult the manual for your exact saw for its model-specific instructions.

How to reduce chainsaw kickback
The upper edge of a chainsaw bar can drive the saw back toward the user. The top curve at the bar nose is especially hazardous, so avoid contacting material with that area. Operate with both hands on the saw and wear eye protection; WOOD Magazine recommends a full face shield as better protection for this work.
