To install a stair skirt board, first decide whether it will sit against a wall or on an exposed stair edge, then measure the actual stair run, lay out the slope and tread-and-riser profile, test-fit the cuts, and fasten the board securely. A skirt board is finish trim—not automatically a structural stringer—and careful fitting matters more than choosing one standard board size.
What a stair skirt board does
A skirt board is trim that finishes the edge of a stair run and can help protect an adjacent wall from scuffs. In a wall-side installation, it fits between the stringer and wall; on an exposed side, it follows the stair profile. The board’s dimensions and attachment depend on the staircase and the trim design.
Before starting, identify the board’s position, how it will meet the floor or landing and any baseboard, and whether the riser ends will be mitered or square. These choices affect the layout and end cuts.
Tools and materials
- Suitable, straight skirt-board stock long and wide enough for the full run. A 1×12 is one installation-guide example, not a universal size; choose dimensions to suit the actual stairs and design.
- Fasteners suitable for the material and the structure receiving them.
- A level, chalk line, framing square, and tape measure.
- A saw for the main cuts, plus a jigsaw or multi-tool for finishing tight corners.
- Filler and the planned paint or stain finish, if appropriate for the selected stock.
A stair-tread template may help with measuring repeated profiles, but it is optional. The key is to capture the geometry of the actual stairs.

- Trim Saving - The trim removal tool has a larger, flatter and wider contact area than clumsy traditional tools and features an integrated wedged center that provides increased removal efficiency and prevents damage to both the trim and wall
- Sturdy Pry Bars - Our trim puller is made from carbon steel and 65Mn steel with black electrophoretic and polished finish, which protects against corrosion and gives our pry bar added durability and strength. So the Trim Puller is a very beefy tool, and it will hold up well to repeated whacking
- Multi-Function - Ideal for commercial work, repair and remodel projects where care and precision are needed, including cabinets, countertops, flooring, and many more. It can be used on a kitchen remodel, removing a couple of sections of baseboard, a countertop from some base cabinets, and pulling up a ceramic tile floor. The very edge can also be used to pry up the staples
- Ergonomic Handle - The trim puller is built with an ergonomic, comfortable and textured dipped handle. An impact-absorbing TPR+PP handle makes it comfortable to hold
- Revolutionary Tool - Our Trim Puller is a very beefy tool. The Built-in spring design assists in separating the trim from the wall freely and quickly. The 15-degree wedged center is for easy extraction of trim and baseboards. Goldblatt holds a U.S. patent for this Trim Puller, patent number US 11,142,921
Choose the right layout for the stair side
| Installation | How to lay it out | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Wall side | Position the board against the finished wall, mark the run, and lay out the sloping edge. Plan for the tread and riser thickness so the trim covers the intended interface. | Check the wall-side fit and the transition to baseboard or landing. The cited guide advises fastening this board to studs; use attachment suited to the actual substrate and structure. |
| Exposed side | Temporarily tack the board in position, mark each tread-and-riser profile directly on it, then remove it to cut. | Scribing in place accounts for variation in the actual staircase. Dry-fit the cut board before fastening. |
Install the skirt board step by step
- Inspect and measure the full run. Check the staircase from its lower floor or landing to the upper transition. Note tread and riser thickness, the wall or exposed edge, and where the skirt must meet adjoining trim. Measure the full run before cutting.
- Select and position the stock. Choose a straight board that covers the intended interface and is large enough for the complete profile. For a wall-side board, set it against the finished wall and check that its depth accounts for the tread and riser thickness. Mark the top and bottom of the run.
- Lay out the slope and profile. Use a level to establish vertical marks and a chalk line to mark the slope. A framing square set to the stair’s rise and run can help repeat the tread-and-riser pattern. Work from the measured stairs rather than assuming every step is identical.
- Cut and test-fit the wall-side board. Make the planned end and transition cuts, then place the board back against the wall. Check its coverage and the fit at the floor or landing and adjoining baseboard. Adjust the cuts to suit the actual junction before fastening.
- Scribe the exposed-side profile, if applicable. Temporarily tack the board in its intended position and mark the outline of each tread and riser on it. Remove the board and cut to those marks. This transfers the existing stair geometry to the trim.
- Finish the corners without overcutting. If the design calls for mitered riser ends, include those in the layout; tread cuts may be square. Stop power-saw cuts short of intersecting layout lines, then finish the corners with a jigsaw or multi-tool. Dry-fit the board and check the corners before securing it.
- Fasten and finish. Attach the skirt securely to suitable structure using fasteners selected for the substrate and local practice. Check the tread-and-riser interfaces, then fill and finish the board to suit the material and paint or stain plan.
How to avoid gaps and ragged corners
- Measure the actual stair run and account for tread and riser thickness before choosing the board dimensions.
- For an exposed side, mark the profile with the board temporarily in its final position instead of relying only on nominal measurements.
- Make the main cuts cautiously and stop short at inside corners; finish those cuts with a jigsaw or multi-tool to avoid crossing the layout line.
- Dry-fit before fastening so you can correct the ends, corners, and landing or baseboard transition while the board is still adjustable.
- Use secure attachment into suitable building structure; there is no single fastener pattern established for every residential stair and substrate.
Standards and scope
The Architectural Woodwork Institute’s installation requirements address secure attachment to building structure and provide details for wood stair systems, including skirt-related gaps and stringer fastener placement. Those provisions apply within their stated scope; they are not a universal residential building-code rule. Stair construction requirements vary by jurisdiction, so check locally adopted requirements if the work alters the stair assembly. ADA stairway standards address applicable handrail requirements, such as continuity and height, rather than skirt-board dimensions.
