Steam bicycles were experimental steam-powered cycles, not a standardized vehicle. One well-documented example is Sylvester Roper’s steam velocipede, dated by the Smithsonian to about 1869. It shows that inventors explored steam propulsion for personal transport, but the available evidence does not establish a single uncontested inventor or widespread everyday use.
What was a steam bicycle?
“Steam bicycle” is an umbrella term for experimental steam-powered cycles and velocipedes. The phrase describes a type of propulsion, not one standard design. Historical records include both built machines and patented designs, so it is important to distinguish a surviving vehicle from an idea set out in a patent.
Who built the Roper steam velocipede?
Sylvester Roper, a Massachusetts machinist and inventor, built the Roper Steam Velocipede. The Smithsonian National Museum of American History dates the artifact to about 1869 and says Roper demonstrated it at fairs and circuses. Its forged-iron frame and wooden wheels give it the appearance of a late-1860s velocipede.
The museum’s bicycle-history account places the machine in the velocipede era. “About 1869” is an approximate artifact date, not a precise construction date. See the Smithsonian’s history of the velocipede and its Roper Steam Velocipede object record.

When was the steam bicycle invented?
There is no established single invention date for steam bicycles as a category. The Smithsonian dates Roper’s machine to about 1869, while other records document additional experimentation. A U.S. patent titled “Steam-bicycle” describes a bicycle propelled by steam, and the Smithsonian’s cycle-collection catalog discusses other experimental steam-propelled road vehicles. A patent establishes that a design was documented; it does not by itself prove the machine was built or used.
These records support a history of experimentation, not a settled claim that Roper—or any one inventor—made the first steam bicycle. They also do not establish production totals or widespread everyday adoption. Consult the US583809A patent record and The Smithsonian Cycle Collection for those separate strands of evidence.

The Roper artifact is in the collection of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Its collection record does not establish whether it is currently on public display, so check the museum’s current information before planning a visit. The Smithsonian’s collections database record identifies the object.
