Can You Put Mass Loaded Vinyl on Existing Walls?

Mass loaded vinyl can be installed over existing drywall, but it needs stud support and a new drywall layer. Here’s how the retrofit compares with placing MLV beneath drywall.

Yes. Mass loaded vinyl (MLV) can be installed over existing drywall, but it must be fastened into the wall studs—not supported by the drywall alone—and covered with a new drywall layer. If you can open the wall, placing MLV against the studs beneath the new drywall is the preferred approach in the TECHNOFLEX installation guide.

Two ways to install MLV on a wall

MLV is a dense, flexible sound-barrier sheet used as one component of a wall assembly. The installation route depends chiefly on whether you can open the wall and how the material will be supported.

Installation route How it is placed Practical consideration
Against framing beneath drywall Place MLV against the studs, then cover it with drywall. TECHNOFLEX describes this as the preferred placement for wall applications. It requires access to the framing before the new drywall goes up.
Over existing drywall Locate the studs, fasten the MLV through the existing drywall into the studs, then install a new drywall layer over it. This is a retrofit option, but it adds a layer of material and finish work. Second Skin Audio cautions that existing drywall alone cannot support the MLV’s weight.

The TECHNOFLEX Mass Loaded Vinyl Installation Guide describes the overlay as an alternative: “Alternatively, MLV can be placed over the existing drywall.”

How to install MLV over existing drywall

  1. Find and mark the studs. The fasteners need to pass through the existing drywall and engage the framing; do not treat the drywall as the material’s structural support.
  2. Fasten the MLV into the studs. Follow the sheeting manufacturer’s installation instructions for fastening and handling.
  3. Cover the MLV with new drywall. The retrofit guidance from Second Skin Audio describes adding a new drywall layer over the MLV.
  4. Finish the new drywall. Plan for the added wall thickness and the associated finishing work. Check product instructions for compatible seam or edge treatments if you use them.

What to consider before choosing the retrofit

  • Can you open the wall? If so, the preferred placement in the TECHNOFLEX guide is against the studs beneath drywall. If the existing wall needs to stay in place, an overlay is an available alternative.
  • How will the MLV be supported? For an overlay, locate the framing and fasten into studs. Do not rely on drywall alone to carry the material.
  • How much added thickness and finish work is acceptable? An overlay adds MLV and another drywall layer, so account for the change at trim, outlets, doors, and adjoining surfaces before starting.
  • What is the full wall assembly? MLV is only one element of sound isolation. The manufacturer FAQ for Mass Loaded Vinyl says the company generally recommends MLV for lightweight assemblies and prefers decoupling products where feasible. That is manufacturer guidance, not a controlled comparison of these two installation routes.

Will MLV make the wall soundproof?

Neither the fact that MLV is installed nor the choice between these two routes establishes a specific sound-reduction result. Performance depends on the complete wall assembly, and the cited guidance does not provide a tested result for a particular existing wall or a like-for-like comparison of the retrofit and in-wall methods. Treat claims of a guaranteed STC rating or a fixed reduction as unsubstantiated unless they are backed by testing of a relevant assembly.
