Don’t shake, move or drop a lava lamp while it’s warm. LAVA® Lamp warns that warm handling can make the liquid cloudy or cause the wax to break apart. If your lamp is cloudy, follow the instructions for your model and the situation; don’t open the globe or try to fix it with improvised heating or cooling.
Why you should leave a warm lava lamp alone
A lava lamp depends on its contents warming and circulating inside a sealed globe. LAVA® Lamp’s FAQ says, “Do not move, shake or drop your Lava® lamp while it is warm.” Its US instruction manual warns that shaking a warm lamp can make it cloudy and the condition may be unable to be repaired. These are the manufacturer’s cautions, not a guarantee that every cloudy lamp has the same cause or outcome.
Wait until the lamp has cooled before handling it. The LAVA® US manual says cooling takes two to three hours after switch-off and cautions against handling the lamp while it is plugged in. Electrical Safety First also advises letting the glass cool before handling it.
What to do if your lamp is cloudy
LAVA® Lamp’s FAQ gives this staged procedure for a cloudy lamp. It is guidance, not a promise that cloudiness will clear.

- Switch the lamp off and leave it undisturbed at room temperature for about eight hours so the wax can settle.
- Turn it on and let it warm until the wax starts to soften.
- Switch it off and allow it to cool.
- Run it for eight to 10 hours.
If it remains cloudy, LAVA® directs owners to contact its Guest Services. Follow the instructions supplied with your exact model if they differ.
If you shook the lamp while it was warm
LAVA®’s UK care and maintenance document gives a separate first step for a warm lamp that has been shaken: switch it off and leave it undisturbed for 24 hours, then run it normally. This is distinct from the FAQ’s staged procedure for a cloudy lamp; don’t combine the two into a guaranteed repair. If the lamp remains cloudy or appears damaged, consult its model-specific instructions or contact LAVA® Guest Services.

Keep the globe sealed
Do not remove the cap or add anything to the globe. The LAVA® US manual says the air space inside allows for expansion and warns that breaking the seal voids the warranty. Opening the globe or adding liquid is not a safe troubleshooting step.

- Operate it at 68–75°F (21–24°C).
