You can cut the spider babies—also called spiderettes or plantlets—off your spider plant, but you do not have to. Leave them attached for a fuller, cascading display, or detach them to grow separate plants or tidy the parent plant’s shape. For propagation, visible aerial roots are a useful cue; if you are unsure, let a baby root in its own pot while it is still attached.

Leave the plantlets attached or cut them off?

Choice Best if you want What to do
Leave attached A fuller, cascading basket, or time to let a plantlet root before separating it. Keep the runner connected. To start a new plant, rest the baby on moist potting medium in a nearby pot and wait for it to root.
Cut and pot A separate plant or a tidier-looking parent plant. When roots are visible, cut the runner between the parent and plantlet with clean scissors or pruners, then pot the baby in moist growing mix.
Cut without potting Simply removing the hanging plantlets. Detach them with clean scissors or pruners. The extension guidance reviewed does not establish that routine trimming is needed to improve the parent plant’s health.

Clemson Cooperative Extension describes both detaching rooted plantlets to make new plants and leaving them attached for a fuller basket. Its guidance notes, “New plantlets will root when they come into contact with soil.” Clemson Cooperative Extension: Spider Plant.

When is a spider plant baby ready to cut?

Look for small aerial roots on the plantlet. Waiting until roots are visible gives the baby a head start, though complete root development is not always necessary: Illinois Extension says spider plants root easily and notes that gardeners often pot plantlets before they have a complete root system. University of Illinois Extension: Specialized Structures: Offsets and Plantlets.

If the roots are already developed, pot the plantlet directly into moist growing medium, spreading the roots into the mix. If you would rather not guess whether its roots are ready, Wisconsin Extension recommends letting it root in a separate pot while it remains connected to the parent. University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension: Spider Plant.

How to propagate a plantlet

Root it in soil while it is attached

  1. Set a small pot of moist potting medium beside the parent plant.
  2. Rest the plantlet on the surface of the mix, keeping its runner attached. A bent paper clip or piece of wire can hold it in contact with the soil.
  3. Wait until the plantlet has rooted, then cut the runner connecting it to the parent.

This approach lets the baby root while it can still draw support through the attached runner. Wisconsin Extension describes this method for spider plant propagation. University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension: Spider Plant.

Pot a plantlet that already has roots

  1. Use clean scissors or pruners to cut the runner between the parent and the rooted plantlet.
  2. Place the roots in moist growing mix and gently settle the medium around them.
  3. Set the new plant in bright, indirect light. Water when the top inch of soil begins to feel dry.

Tennessee Extension recommends cutting with clean tools when aerial roots form and gives the bright, indirect light and top-inch watering guidance for a newly potted plant. University of Tennessee Extension: Spider Plant.

Root a plantlet with very small roots in water

If the roots are still very small, Tennessee Extension describes placing the root end in water while keeping the leaves out. It suggests that this may take a couple of weeks, but that is an estimate, not a guaranteed schedule. Pot the plantlet once its roots have grown a few inches. You can instead use the attached-soil method if you prefer not to root it in water. University of Tennessee Extension: Spider Plant.

Will cutting the babies help the parent plant?

Not necessarily. The extension guidance here explains plantlet propagation and the option of removing plantlets for appearance, but does not establish that routine removal makes the parent plant healthier. Remove them if you want separate plants or a different shape; otherwise, leaving them attached is a sound option.

Does your spider plant make fewer babies?

N.C. State Extension notes that aerial roots form as plantlets mature and that over-fertilizing can reduce plantlet formation. That information may help explain why a plant produces fewer babies, but it does not change whether you should cut off the ones it has. N.C. State Extension: Chlorophytum comosum.

UF/IFAS advises bright to moderate indirect light and allowing the upper inch of soil to dry briefly between waterings. It also reports that spider plant was predicted to become invasive in Florida natural areas and is no longer recommended by UF/IFAS Extension there; that is Florida-specific guidance, not a general conclusion about keeping it as an indoor plant elsewhere. UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions: Spider Plant.
