Yes—cut daylilies back in fall once their leaves have yellowed, browned, or died. Leave healthy green foliage in place: it continues to make and transfer energy that supports next year’s growth and bloom. If the foliage is still green when you tidy the garden, wait until early spring instead.
When to cut daylily foliage
Use the condition of the leaves, not the calendar alone. Daylily foliage can be cut back when it begins to yellow or after it has turned brown and died. Removing dead foliage in late fall is a reasonable cleanup choice; leaving it until early spring is also supported by extension guidance. If you wait, clear the dead material before new growth makes it difficult to distinguish.
For the cut height, recommendations vary. An Ask Extension response says a few inches above the soil is sufficient, while University of Minnesota Extension advises leaving 5 or 6 inches. These are source-specific suggestions, not a single universal height. Use clean hand pruners if needed; no specialized tool is required.
Why not cut green leaves after flowering?
Do not mow or shear daylilies down just because flowering has finished. The leaves continue to support the plant after bloom, and cutting them too early reduces the time available to make and transfer energy for the following season. In its September 10, 2018 response, Ask Extension explains that early leaf removal can deprive the plant of energy needed for good bloom the next year. Wait for natural yellowing or dieback.

Remove spent flower stalks separately
Finished flower stalks, called scapes, are different from the leafy foliage. Clemson Cooperative Extension recommends cutting spent scapes close to ground level. Removing the stalks does not mean the remaining green leaves should also be cut back.
What to do with diseased leaves
If leaves show signs of disease, remove affected foliage rather than leaving it in the bed, and clear up fallen debris. An Ask Extension answer on daylily leaf streak notes that the fungus can overwinter on plant debris. It also recommends improving airflow and avoiding overhead watering. This cleanup advice is specific to diseased material; it is not a reason to remove healthy green leaves.

Why some daylilies stay green through winter
Daylily cultivars differ in foliage habit. University of Minnesota Extension describes dormant types, which die back, as well as semi-evergreen and evergreen types that may retain foliage through winter. A green leaf in fall is therefore not automatically spent or ready to remove. Base the decision on whether foliage is healthy or dying, rather than expecting every variety to look the same.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fall cleanup and division are separate tasks
Routine cutting back is not the same as dividing an overcrowded clump. Extension recommendations for division differ: the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture lists fall or spring as possible periods, while Minnesota Extension recommends early spring or immediately after flowering. Timing depends on local conditions, so treat division as a separate decision rather than a reason to cut healthy foliage in fall.
