There is no one right footprint for a small chicken coop: size depends on how many birds you keep, their breed and size, and whether they have reliable outdoor access. Start by calculating indoor and outdoor space separately, then draw the coop and run together so the layout fits your yard, weather, predator risks, and daily chores.

How much space does each hen need?

Published recommendations differ because they use different assumptions. Small and Backyard Poultry recommends 3–4 square feet of indoor space and 10 square feet of outdoor space per laying hen. The source notes that space needs vary with species, breed, age, outdoor access, and environmental conditions, and that little peer-reviewed research is available on backyard space allowances. These figures are guidance, not a universal legal minimum. Small and Backyard Poultry: space recommendations

Oregon State University Extension Service recommends at least 3 square feet per bird when birds have outdoor access, and 8–10 square feet per bird without outdoor access. Its higher indoor allowance for birds without outdoor access reflects a different use assumption; do not combine the two sources into a single standard. Oregon State University Extension Service: poultry housing

For a flock of three to five chickens, multiply the number of birds by the recommendation you choose. For example, using Small and Backyard Poultry’s figures, three laying hens would need 9–12 square feet indoors and 30 square feet outdoors; five would need 15–20 square feet indoors and 50 square feet outdoors. Those are calculated examples based on that source’s per-bird recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular design will suit every breed or condition.

Choose a plan that fits the site and routine

Draw the coop and run as one layout

Mark the coop and run together on a yard sketch, including doors, access routes, and the space you can actually dedicate to the birds. Compare plans by flock capacity and the indoor/outdoor assumptions behind it; whether a run is included; how it is protected; and whether the complete footprint fits your property.

Pick a dry location and plan for weather

Small and Backyard Poultry recommends a high, well-drained site. Consider prevailing winds, summer heat, precipitation, and seasonal conditions when placing openings and deciding how the run will be used. Small and Backyard Poultry: housing and ventilation

Put chores into the drawing

Before framing, mark cleanout access and make sure you can reach nests, perches, feeders, and waterers. A compact building that is difficult to clean or service can make routine care unnecessarily awkward. Remove or cover loose wire, exposed nails, and sharp edges that could injure birds or people. Ventilation, drafts, and moisture

Ventilation exchanges indoor air to remove moisture, dust, odors, and gases, and helps carry away excess heat in summer. Small and Backyard Poultry recommends adjustable doors or windows to support ventilation while protecting birds from drafts. Place openings so air can move through the house without blowing directly on roosting birds; keep the coop dry, since moisture can contribute to ammonia buildup. Small and Backyard Poultry: housing and ventilation Poultry ventilation guidance

When comparing plans, check where ventilation openings are located, whether they can be adjusted, and how they are protected from precipitation and predators. A plan’s dimensions alone do not show whether it will ventilate appropriately for your site and weather.

Build predator protection into the coop and run

Secure vulnerable openings and the outdoor run against the predators in your area. Small and Backyard Poultry recommends heavy-gauge mesh over windows and suggests burying fence wire at least 12 inches deep, with about 6 inches turned outward, as a barrier against digging predators. These are source-specific recommendations; assess local predator pressure and adapt the barrier and materials to your conditions. Small and Backyard Poultry: housing and predator protection

Cover the run against aerial predators, or secure birds indoors before dark if the run is not predator-proof. When reviewing a plan, inspect the openings, floor, and run perimeter—not just the walls—and check that access doors can be closed securely. The cited guidance does not establish a particular mesh gauge or opening size for every predator, so verify material suitability locally.

Use plans as starting points, not fixed dimensions

A design resource lists a 12-by-20-foot plan for a 100-unit laying house. That scale is not a compact backyard coop, so do not treat it as a small-flock plan or copy its footprint without adapting it to your flock and site. Small and Backyard Poultry: laying-house design

For any plan you consider, check capacity, indoor and outdoor area assumptions, run protection, ventilation, cleanout access, and whether its dimensions and materials can be adapted to your local conditions and requirements. A useful small-coop plan is one that works for your flock and can be maintained safely—not simply one with the smallest footprint.
