Start by observing the spot, then choose plants and containers to suit it.
How do you start a garden in a small space?
Begin with the conditions you have, not a plant list. A balcony that gets strong afternoon sun and a sheltered doorstep in shade call for different choices. Note how much direct sunlight reaches the space, whether it is windy or exposed to rain, and how easily you can reach a water source. Also make sure pots and supports can be placed safely without blocking a door or walkway.
- Observe the location. Record direct-sun hours and exposure to wind and rain. Check plant labels and local planting guidance for requirements and timing.
- Choose one small goal. A few cooking herbs, a container of salad leaves or a flower display is a manageable place to begin.
- Select plants before pots. Check each plant’s mature size, root needs, light requirements and whether it needs support.
- Arrange for access. Leave room to water and harvest. Use shelves, hanging baskets or trellises where they suit the plants and do not crowd light or obstruct movement.
- Monitor and adjust. Check moisture regularly and review plant condition as the season changes. Water, feeding and frost protection vary by crop and location.
Planting calendars are regional. Use local frost dates and regional horticultural advice rather than assuming a UK or US schedule applies everywhere.
How much sun do container vegetables and flowers need?
As a starting point, most vegetables and flowers need at least six hours of sun a day, according to University of Minnesota Extension. This is general guidance, not a rule for every plant: check the label for the particular variety, especially if your space is partly shaded.

Watch the spot at different times of day before buying plants. Buildings, balcony roofs and railings can cast shade that changes with the sun’s position. Match plants to the light you actually have rather than expecting a shade-sensitive crop to thrive in a dim corner.
Which vegetables and herbs work in pots?
Many crops can grow in containers if the pot provides enough room for their roots and the site meets their light and care needs. The Royal Horticultural Society’s container vegetable guidance lists beetroot, beans, carrots, peas, potatoes, radishes, salad leaves, peppers and tomatoes, along with herbs. These are options to consider, not a guarantee of success in every pot or climate.

- For a small edible start: consider salad leaves or radishes, while checking the selected variety’s space and light needs.
- For cooking herbs: University of Illinois Extension lists sage, parsley, oregano, rosemary, marjoram, basil, thyme, chives and summer savory as container candidates. Choose small, slow-growing selections and keep in mind that herbs differ in water needs. See its guide to growing herbs in containers.
- For larger crops: tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, beans and cucumbers need a container suited to their mature size; some also need a trellis or other support. Consult Penn State Extension’s container vegetable guidance for support considerations.
In a limited space, consider mature plant size, root depth, container dimensions and the number of plants sharing a pot. A cramped container can run short of moisture and nutrients. The University of Illinois Extension vegetable-container guide explains why container choice matters; the RHS also covers herbs in containers.
Can you grow flowers or pollinator plants in a small garden?
Yes. Containers can hold a flower display, and they can make use of balconies, patios and other places without garden soil. University of Minnesota Extension gives petunias, marigolds and geraniums as flower examples, and also names native plants that can thrive in containers. Native-plant suitability depends on your region, so check local guidance before choosing one.

Do flower pots need drainage holes?
For most ordinary container plants, yes. Choose a pot with holes in the base so excess water can escape and roots are less likely to remain waterlogged. The RHS states, “It is essential to have drainage holes in the base of a container,” in its container-growing guidance. Illinois Extension likewise explains that drainage lets excess water leave the pot and helps roots get adequate air.

Use a growing medium made for containers rather than ordinary garden soil. University of Minnesota Extension describes potting mix as holding moisture while allowing excess water to drain. Illinois Extension recommends soilless mix for container gardens and notes that garden soil can compact in pots; see its home vegetable gardening planning guide. Drainage holes and a suitable mix are the key considerations; a gravel layer at the bottom is not required by this guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How often should you water and feed container plants?
Containers hold less growing medium than garden beds and can dry faster, so check them often—particularly in warm, windy or exposed conditions. Water when the selected plant and conditions call for it, watering thoroughly and letting the excess drain away. Avoid leaving pots sitting in standing water.

There is no single watering or feeding schedule that fits every container. Needs change with weather, crop, pot size and growing mix. Andrew Holsinger, a University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator, put the drainage point plainly: “Proper drainage is just as important as the amount of water added to the container.” His advice appears in Illinois Extension’s container-watering tips. For herbs, Illinois Extension advises avoiding over-fertilizing; follow plant-specific guidance for other crops.
How can you use vertical space without overcrowding plants?
Shelves, hanging baskets and trellises can make a compact garden more usable. University of Minnesota Extension suggests these as ways to use vertical space. Supports are most useful when a plant benefits from climbing or needs help staying upright: tomatoes, pole beans and cucumbers are examples that may need support.
Choose support based on the crop, and position it so it does not block light from other plants or narrow a passage. Vertical growing saves floor space, but it does not remove a plant’s need for adequate light, root room or water.
What should you check before buying pots and plants?
- Light: How many hours of direct sun reach the spot, and what does the plant label require?
- Plant size: What will the plant’s mature canopy and root system need?
- Container: Is its width and depth appropriate for the crop, and does it have drainage holes?
- Growing medium: Is it intended for containers and able to retain moisture while draining excess?
- Upkeep: Can you check moisture and water as often as the conditions require? Will the crop need feeding?
- Support and placement: Does the plant need a trellis, and can everything be arranged without blocking light or access?
- Local timing: What planting dates and frost guidance apply where you live?
Harvests cannot be predicted from pot size alone: results depend on crop and variety, root volume, light, weather, season and care. Start with a goal and setup you can maintain, then adjust as you learn how the site behaves.
