To close a backyard pool safely, clean it, test and balance the water, set the water level for the pool and cover, protect plumbing and equipment from freezing, and install the right cover. The details depend on the pool’s finish, equipment, local weather, groundwater, and cover instructions—there is no single water level or calendar date that suits every pool.
When should you close the pool?
Finish winterizing before freezing temperatures can reach exposed plumbing or equipment. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ties the timing to the arrival of freezing conditions rather than a universal calendar date, so use your local forecast and the layout of your pool equipment to plan ahead. How to prepare the water
Clean and balance it first
Remove leaves and other debris, clean the pool and filter as appropriate, and test and balance the water before closing. EPA recommends adding winterization chemicals if needed. The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) bulletin also recommends testing and balancing, with treatment guided by the product directions and timing. Handle chemicals carefully
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says: “Read and follow all directions on product labels.” Use suitable protective equipment, such as gloves and goggles, and store chemicals securely away from children and pets. CDC pool-safety guidance

How high should the water be?
There is no universal winter water-level number. The APSP bulletin’s examples vary by pool finish and cover type, and it advises consulting the cover manufacturer’s instructions. Vinyl-lined pools, plaster or painted finishes, and natural finishes may have different requirements; solid covers, mesh covers, and pools without covers also differ. Follow the pool and cover documentation, accounting for expected rain or snow. Do not lower the water below the level needed to protect the liner or structure unless pool-specific instructions support it. How to protect equipment and plumbing from freezing
Before freezing weather arrives, drain water from filters, pumps, heaters, and piping according to the equipment manufacturers’ instructions. Water left inside components can freeze and crack equipment or pipes. Pool systems vary, so do not assume a particular compressor, pressure setting, plug, or antifreeze is right for your setup unless the relevant documentation says so. EPA home-maintenance guidance

Choose and secure the right cover
Use a cover sized and suited to the pool, and install it according to its manufacturer’s instructions. A debris or winter cover is not automatically a safety cover. Oregon Health Authority guidance states: “Pool blankets should never be considered as safety devices.” A pool blanket can create an entrapment hazard; an anchored security cover is a separate product intended to provide a safety layer. CDC recommends preventing unsupervised child access, including with four-sided fencing and self-closing, self-latching gates. Do not rely on a cover alone to prevent drowning. For context, EPA says a pool cover can prevent up to 95 percent of pool-water evaporation. That figure concerns evaporation only; it is not a claim of equivalent savings in total maintenance costs, energy, or chemicals. EPA pool-water efficiency guidance

Why an empty pool can be risky
Do not assume draining the pool completely makes it safer for winter. Oregon’s pool-training manual identifies hydrostatic pressure as a concern: high groundwater can cause an empty pool to float or become damaged. If substantial draining is being considered, get advice specific to the pool and site, particularly where groundwater conditions are uncertain. Oregon pool-training manual
