The Smog Free Tower is a public art and air-cleaning installation, not a household purifier. Studio Roosegaarde says its 7-meter aluminum tower uses positive ionization to clean air; its related Smog Free Ring turns particles collected by the tower into wearable art. The ring is not currently available for individual purchase.
What is the Smog Free Tower?
Studio Roosegaarde describes the Smog Free Tower as a 7-meter aluminum structure designed for public spaces. The studio calls it “the world’s first smog vacuum cleaner” and says it filters polluted air to create clean-air parks. That is the studio’s description of its project, rather than evidence that an entire park or surrounding city has been cleaned.
The project combines an environmental installation with public art. The studio says cities and green companies can commission campaigns that may include the tower, the ring, project management and innovation workshops. Its project page does not state fees or confirm current availability for a particular location.
How does the tower clean air?
The studio says the tower uses positive ionization: particles in the air are electrically charged and collected by the installation. It reports a capacity of 30,000 m³ of air per hour and power use of 1,170 watts of green electricity. These are the studio’s reported specifications, not independent measurements of how much pollution is removed across a neighborhood.

Studio Roosegaarde says the tower’s effectiveness was validated by Professor Dr. Bert Blocken of Eindhoven University of Technology. The project summary does not provide the underlying test report, methods or dataset, so it is not possible from that information to assess test conditions or translate the stated capacity into a public-health outcome.
A 17 October 2019 studio press release described the tower as ozone-free and said test results were obtained by Eindhoven University of Technology. That dated statement is not a substitute for the underlying test documentation.

What is the Smog Free Ring made from?
The Smog Free Ring is made from compressed smog particles collected by the tower, according to Studio Roosegaarde. The studio says each ring represents a donation of 1,000 m³ of clean air to the city. That figure describes the project’s stated symbolism and donation representation; it should not be read as a measurement of the ring’s individual effect on air quality.
For designer Daan Roosegaarde, the wearable object makes pollution tangible and shareable. In the studio’s 2019 press release, he put the project’s values this way: “True beauty is not a Louis Vuitton bag or a Ferrari, but clean air and clean energy.”

Can you buy a Smog Free Ring?
No. Studio Roosegaarde’s ring page says it is no longer available for individual purchase. The studio says new rings will launch with future Smog Free Tower campaigns, but it does not provide a current release date or purchasing terms.
The page lists rings in permanent museum collections, including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Utah Museum of Fine Arts, National Museum Zurich and The Biosphere Environment Museum. Museum collection listings indicate the work’s cultural presence, not retail availability.

Where has the tower appeared?
Studio Roosegaarde’s selected-exhibition timeline begins with the tower’s opening in Rotterdam in September 2015. It lists subsequent appearances in Beijing in 2016; Tianjin and Dalian in 2017; Poland in 2018; South Korea in 2019; and Abu Dhabi in February 2024. This is the studio’s project history, not confirmation that every installation remains in operation.
For the Abu Dhabi installation, the studio says it partnered with the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi. The project page describes commissioning campaigns for cities and green companies, but does not establish specific contract terms.

What the reported figures do—and do not—show
The tower’s stated hourly capacity is not the same as evidence that local residents experienced cleaner air or improved health. The reviewed project information provides no population-level health statistics and no detailed validation protocol. A reader considering the tower as a city intervention would need independently documented measurements, test conditions, operating and maintenance information, and evidence about exposure and health outcomes before drawing conclusions beyond the studio’s specifications.
For a construction or public-space project, the useful distinction is between a commissioned installation with published vendor specifications and a verified environmental or health intervention. The studio’s figures describe the former; the available project summary does not establish the latter.
