The Basics of Using a Tap and Die Set

A tap cuts internal threads and a die cuts external threads. Learn how to choose the matching size and use each tool with proper alignment.

A tap cuts threads inside a drilled hole; a die cuts threads on the outside of a round rod. To use either tool successfully, match it to the intended thread specification, keep it aligned as it starts, and follow the tool maker’s guidance for lubrication and cutting.

What taps and dies do

  • Tap: cuts or restores internal threads in a hole.
  • Die: cuts or restores external threads on a round rod.

A hand tap-and-die set is useful for making threaded connections or repairing existing threads. The tool must match the thread you need; choosing one by appearance alone is not enough.

Choose the thread and matching sizes

Identify the required thread standard and size first. For a tapped hole, use the set’s tap-drill chart or a chart for that exact thread specification to select the drill size. Do not guess: a hole that is too large can leave an incorrectly sized internal thread that may fail when tightened or put into service, as explained by Park Tool’s basic thread concepts guide.

As a rough metric guide, Accu describes subtracting the pitch from the thread’s major diameter. Its example for M6 × 1.0 gives a 5.0 mm drill. Treat that as an approximation, not a substitute for the chart and specification required for your work: Accu’s thread-cutting guide.

For a die, choose the size that matches the intended thread on the rod. Before buying or using a set, check its thread system and size coverage, whether you need internal or external threading, and whether it includes the appropriate tap wrench or die holder and a drill chart. For a blind hole or specialized thread form, verify the correct tap type and thread standard rather than assuming a basic set is suitable.

Cut an internal thread with a tap

  1. Confirm the thread and drill size. Match the tap to the required thread and use the corresponding tap-drill chart to prepare the hole.
  2. Secure the workpiece. Hold it firmly so it cannot shift while you cut.
  3. Fit the tap in a tap holder and align it squarely. The first turns establish the thread’s axis, so take care to start straight.
  4. Cut in short cycles. Turn the tap two to three full turns, then reverse it one-half to three-quarters of a turn to break the chip. Repeat this cycle as needed to make the thread.
  5. Use cutting fluid as directed. Follow the tool manufacturer’s recommendation for the material and tool.

This hand-tapping sequence is described in IRWIN’s guide to using a tap and die set, updated October 3, 2022.

Cut an external thread with a die

  1. Match the die to the intended thread. Check the thread specification and the rod before starting.
  2. Fit the die in a die holder. Use the holder to control the tool rather than turning it by hand.
  3. Start the die square to the rod. Keep it aligned as the first turns establish the thread.
  4. Use cutting fluid as recommended by the manufacturer.

A die is not a fix for every rod that is incorrectly sized or damaged. Assess the workpiece and confirm that it is appropriate for the thread you intend to cut.
