Usually, no. Healthy strawberry plants should not be cut back as a general fall chore. June-bearing strawberries are renovated soon after their harvest, while everbearing and day-neutral plants should not be mowed like June-bearers. In fall, focus instead on winter protection that suits your climate.
First, identify which strawberries you grow
The right care depends on the fruiting type, not simply the season. June-bearing strawberries produce a concentrated main crop. Everbearing and day-neutral strawberries can produce later crops or continue fruiting into late summer and fall, so a blanket fall cutback can remove foliage from plants that are still producing or growing.
If you are unsure of the type, check the plant label or the variety information from the nursery. Do not assume a plant should be mowed just because fall has arrived.
When to renovate June-bearing strawberries
Renovation means cutting back old foliage after the June-bearing crop is finished so plants can regrow. Do it promptly after the final harvest, while enough of the growing season remains for new leaves to develop—not in fall as a routine cleanup task.

- Iowa State University Extension recommends renovation in late June or July and advises mowing within one week of the final harvest. Its guidance warns that mowing later can destroy new leaf growth: Renovation of June Bearing Strawberries and How do you renovate June-bearing strawberries?
- Oregon State University Extension describes renovating roughly one to two weeks after harvest; late July or early August is a regional example for the Willamette Valley, not a date that applies everywhere: Growing strawberries in your home garden.
- Washington State University Extension advises not to mow if renovation cannot be completed by August 1 under its guidance: Renovating June-bearing Strawberries.
These calendar dates reflect regional guidance. Your harvest date, cultivar, and local growing season matter more than a universal date on the calendar. If the harvest is long past and the plants have regrown, do not mow them in fall to catch up.
How to cut without damaging the crowns
For a June-bearing bed that is being renovated on time, cut off the old leaves while leaving the crown—the plant’s central growing point—intact. Extension recommendations vary: Iowa State specifies cutting about one inch above the crowns, Oregon State about two inches, and Washington State two to three inches. Follow the appropriate local guidance; the shared rule is to keep the blade above the crown.

- ONE-HAND SAFETY LOCK: The easy-access safety lock opens and closes with one hand for faster trimming, then securely holds the blades closed for safer carrying and storage
Use a mower only where the bed and terrain allow a controlled cut. For small or raised beds, Oregon State lists hand shears as an option. They are optional; careful cutting matters more than the tool. Rake or collect loose foliage and fruit debris where practical. Oregon State notes that removing debris from small plantings can reduce fruit-rot incidence the following spring.
What to do with everbearing and day-neutral plants
Do not mow everbearing or day-neutral strawberries as though they were June-bearing plants. They may still be fruiting or putting on growth when June-bearers would normally be renovated. Iowa State recommends maintaining them as individual plants and removing runners rather than mowing the bed. Oregon State likewise advises against renovating these types while they are still fruiting in late summer.

Use fall for climate-appropriate winter protection
In places where winter conditions call for it, mulch can protect strawberry crowns from temperature extremes and dry winter winds. Iowa State recommends applying mulch in mid-fall and removing it when new spring growth begins. This is winter protection, not a reason to cut healthy foliage first.

Winter moisture changes the advice. Oregon State cautions that straw mulch can promote rot in western Oregon and other wet-winter microclimates. Check local extension guidance before covering a bed, especially where winter soil and mulch tend to stay wet. Oregon State’s home-garden guide includes regional guidance on winter mulch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Sanitation is not the same as a fall cutback
Old leaves, petioles, and mummified fruit can harbor gray mold through winter, according to Oregon State University Extension’s gray-mold prevention guide. Removing diseased or dead material as part of timely, post-harvest care is different from cutting down healthy plants in fall. The disease guidance does not establish a general fall cutback for healthy strawberry foliage.
