Usually, no. Pocket-hole screws pull the pieces together, so glue is optional for many ordinary assemblies. Use it selectively for solid-wood panel glue-ups, visible miter seams, and outdoor projects where you choose an exterior-rated wood glue. The right choice depends on the joint and exposure—not a rule that every pocket-screw joint must be glued.
When is glue optional?
For a typical indoor frame or cabinet assembly, you can generally rely on correctly selected pocket-hole screws without adding glue. Kreg, a pocket-hole system manufacturer, says its joints can be assembled without glue. Its guidance does not establish an independent, measured strength gain from adding glue, so there is no basis here for claiming glue makes every pocket-hole joint stronger.
When should you add glue?
Solid-wood panels joined edge to edge
For a panel made by joining solid-wood board edges, apply glue to the mating edges as part of the panel glue-up. Wood changes width as humidity changes; a bonded seam can help reduce visible or tactile gaps. Pocket screws can help draw the boards together and keep them aligned during assembly.
Mitered corners
Consider glue on a miter, particularly when an opening at the outside tips would be visible. Seasonal wood movement can cause those tips to separate, and glue can help keep the seam closed for a cleaner appearance.

Outdoor projects
If you glue an outdoor pocket-hole joint, use exterior-rated wood glue. Rain or snow and broader swings in humidity and temperature make outdoor conditions harsher than a dry indoor setting.
MDF and stock prone to splitting
Kreg’s FAQ recommends glue for MDF, while also noting MDF’s risk of splitting. Treat that as material-specific guidance, not a universal fix: use the jig maker’s instructions for setup and screw choice, and avoid overtightening. Glue does not correct an unsuitable screw or poorly prepared hole.

Choose screws for the material and exposure
Glue is only one part of the joint. Kreg recommends pocket-hole screws with a flat head designed to seat in the pocket. Its guidance distinguishes coarse threads for softwoods and sheet goods such as plywood and MDF from fine threads for dense hardwoods. Screw coating or material should also suit the moisture conditions, from dry indoor use to damp or corrosive environments.

Assemble without damaging the workpiece
- Follow the jig manufacturer’s instructions for stock thickness, drilling depth, screw length, and settings.
- Clamp the pieces when needed to keep their faces aligned while driving screws.
- Stop when the screw is snug. Overtightening can strip the hole or damage the wood.
