The right method and timing depend on the collector and filter design. For the JET DC-1200VX-BK1/BK3 models covered by the cited instructions, the procedure is to disconnect power, shake dust into the collector bag, remove the filter bag, turn it inside out to clean it, and reinstall it securely. Wear a particle mask or respirator while cleaning. Follow your own model’s manual rather than assuming this method applies to every collector.
Why clean the filter bag?
JET recommends cleaning both the filter and collector bags frequently to maintain performance on the DC-1200VX-BK1/BK3. Its instructions do not give a fixed calendar interval, so use the maintenance schedule or cleaning trigger specified for your model. JET DC-1200VX-BK1/BK3 manual, reproduced on Manualshelf.
How to clean the cited JET filter bag
This sequence applies to the JET DC-1200VX-BK1/BK3 procedure, not automatically to other collectors. The JET DC-1200A manual excerpt describes a similar approach. JET DC-1200A manual, reproduced on Manualshelf.
- Disconnect the dust collector from its power source before handling the bag.
- Shake the filter bag so most of the dust falls into the collector bag.
- Loosen the retaining strap and remove the filter bag.
- Turn the filter bag inside out and clean it as directed for that model.
- Turn it right side out and secure it to the housing again.
Protect yourself from airborne dust
JET highly recommends wearing a particle mask or respirator to protect against fine dust during cleaning. The cited manual excerpt does not specify a respirator rating. Choose protection appropriate to the dust and follow the applicable safety guidance for the material you are handling.

Do not assume washing or compressed air is acceptable
The cited JET instructions describe shaking and cleaning the bag; they do not authorize washing it or cleaning it with compressed air. Those methods may not suit every filter. Check the manual for your exact collector and filter before using a different cleaning method.
Different collectors use different cleaning systems
Industrial baghouses may use manual or mechanical shaking, reverse air, or pulse-jet cleaning. NIOSH notes that the optimum cleaning cycle depends on manufacturer recommendations and experience; these industrial approaches are not a substitute for the instructions for a small-shop collector.
