The most reliable way to protect a sapling from a mower is to create a mower-free mulched area around it. Mow carefully at the edge of that area, and use hand shears for grass that remains close to the trunk. A trunk guard can add protection in a high-risk spot, but it does not replace keeping lawn equipment away.
Why lawn equipment can seriously injure a sapling
Young trees with thin bark are especially vulnerable to mower and trimmer strikes. Richard Jauron of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach notes that “Young, thin-barked trees are particularly prone to injury.” A blade or trimmer line can strip bark; repeated wounds may girdle the trunk and kill the tree, and damaged areas can provide entry points for wood-decay fungi. Make a mower-free mulch zone
Clear grass around the tree to create a visible buffer that keeps both mower wheels and trimming work away from the trunk. Size the area to fit the mower, the site, and the space needed to work without approaching the bark. A larger ring may be practical where a mower needs room to turn or where the edge would otherwise require frequent trimming. Iowa State and Purdue recommend a shallow mulch layer, with their depth guidance varying slightly: Iowa State recommends 2–4 inches, while Purdue recommends 2–3 inches. Use shredded bark, wood chips, or another suitable mulch, but keep it off the trunk. Iowa State’s tree-planting guidance describes shallow mulch at least six inches from the trunk; do not build a mound against the bark. Iowa State University Extension, “Tree Planting Basics”.

A mulch ring can also conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and reduce competition from turf, but it is not a guarantee against mower damage: equipment still needs to remain outside the protected area. Colorado State University Extension reports that mulch can reduce soil-surface evaporation by 25–50% and that trees under mulch can have 400% more fine root hairs than trees under grass. Those figures describe mulch-related soil and root benefits, not a measured reduction in mower injuries. Colorado State University Extension, “Mulching Trees and Shrubs”.
Mow the edge and hand-cut what remains
- Stop the mower several inches from the trunk rather than trying to cut right up to the bark.
- Keep string trimmers away from the trunk; their line can wound bark quickly.
- Use hand shears to trim any remaining grass close to the tree, taking care not to nick the trunk.
These steps complement the mulch buffer: the goal is to avoid needing powered equipment next to the sapling. Iowa State University Extension, “Mower blight”.

Use a trunk guard only as extra protection
A guard may be useful where equipment could still reach the tree, but treat it as a backup—not a reason to mow or trim against the trunk. Purdue recommends trunk guards or similar devices for added protection. The University of Minnesota tree-owner manual describes plastic tubing or hardware cloth as examples and specifies 1–4 inches of clearance between the guard and trunk; those are examples from that manual, not universal dimensions for every guard. Inspect the guard periodically, enlarge it or remove it as the tree grows, and make sure it is not rubbing or constricting the trunk. Trunk wraps are generally unnecessary during the growing season when mower and trimmer access is already controlled. Iowa State distinguishes that from seasonal wrapping that may be used for winter animal protection; winter protection is a separate concern from mower safety. If the trunk has already been struck
Assess the wound’s size and condition. Because mower and trimmer injuries can be serious, seek advice from a qualified local tree-care professional or extension service for substantial, worsening, or extensive damage. The cited guidance establishes the risks but does not prescribe one treatment for every wound.
