That flexibility can save setup time and shop space, but it does not make one router ideal for every task. Compare power, control, adjustment, table workflow, handling, and accessories against the work you actually do.
What a multibase kit does—and when it makes sense
The main advantage is sharing a motor between bases. In a common setup, the fixed base stays in the router table while the motor is moved to a plunge base for handheld cuts. WOOD Magazine contributor Jim Heavey described using a Bosch MRC23EVSK this way in a 2022 account; that account identifies variable speed and 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch collets. The 2024 comparison names the Bosch MRC23EVS, a different suffix. Do not assume those package names are interchangeable without checking the manufacturer’s documentation.
A kit is worth considering if you regularly switch between table routing and plunge work, want a fixed base to remain installed, and can use the included bases and accessories. A dedicated router may be a better fit if your work is concentrated in one mode or you need a tool configured specifically for a particular task. The right choice depends on the actual workflow: a router that fits the table can still be awkward to adjust or change bits once installed.
What the published shop test established
In its comparison updated December 18, 2024, WOOD Magazine tested nine routers: three dedicated plunge routers and six multibase kits. It evaluated power with large bits, variable speed with soft start and electronic feedback, balance and fixed-depth handling, plunge action and features, through-the-base table adjustment, and useful accessories. Its red-oak tasks included 1/2-inch-wide plunge mortises 1 1/2 inches deep, full-depth profiles, a 7/16-inch by 1/2-inch rabbet, and work with a 3 1/2-inch-diameter raised-panel bit in a router table.

- Material: Steel | Helps decrease the amount of lost bits
- Color: Black
- For use with 1/2",1/4" shank router bits | 1/2,1/4 inch router collet
WOOD reported that all nine routers completed its specified tasks. In a more demanding two-pass raised-panel test, only three 15-amp models completed the cut without bogging down. These are results from that magazine’s test setup, not a guarantee of performance with every wood species, bit, feed rate, or shop configuration.
The review named the Bosch MRC23EVS its Top Tool and the Ridgid R29302 its Top Value. Those are the results of the 2024 comparison, not current rankings or price guidance. It also tested the Bosch 1617EVSPK, Craftsman 28084, Freud FT3000VCE, Milwaukee 5616-24, Porter-Cable 895PK, and Triton MOF001C and TRA001. Treat these names as historical test context; verify exact model suffixes, current product status, and compatibility before buying.

How to compare kits for your shop
Power, speed range, and control under load
Consider the bits and cuts you expect to make, not just a motor’s headline power rating. Large bits and demanding profiles place more load on a router than light edge work. Look for a usable speed range, soft start, and electronic speed feedback if those features matter to your work; also consider whether the motor holds speed under load. WOOD’s test illustrates why: all models managed its specified tasks, but only three 15-amp models completed its harder raised-panel test without bogging down.
Handling, depth setting, and plunge action
For handheld work, check how the router balances in the base, whether the grips feel secure, and whether the switch and speed controls are accessible without compromising control. On a plunge base, assess the smoothness of travel, the plunge lock, and whether depth settings are easy to set and repeat. On a fixed base, look at how precisely the depth can be adjusted and whether the adjustment is practical in your intended setup.

- Bits Precisely match the requirement of the American dimension and standard.
- American industry classification C3 Carbide. Provide superior wear resistance and sharp edges for the best finish.
- MNA 35-piece set is a complete set for the professional woodworker. It has a great variety of the most popular carbide-tipped bits in a professional aluminum storage case.
- Fit for all types of wood material, such as MDF, Hardwood, Softwood, and Particle Board.
- Universal 1/4” shank is compatible with all major router instrument (either handheld or benchtop router table) such as MNA, Kowood, Bosch, DeWalt, Makita, Tooldo, Milwaukee, Porter & Cable, Skil, Ryobi, Black & Decker
Router-table fit is only the start
Before committing to table use, check where the table’s access opening lands relative to the router’s controls and adjustment points. Determine whether you can adjust height from above the table and change bits without removing the router or struggling to reach under the insert. Control placement, access-hole position, height adjustment, and bit changes all affect the workflow; a compatible mounting pattern alone does not establish that a router will be convenient to use.
Accessories and compatibility
Compare the kit contents with the tasks you plan to do. Useful items may include an edge guide, dust-collection attachments, alternate subbases, a guide-bushing holder or adapter, a centering cone, and a case or bag. Confirm that any included or separately purchased subbase, guide bushing, collet, or table accessory matches the specific router and base. An accessory has little value if it does not fit your setup or solve a real need.

- Quick release cam lock system for easy depth adjustments and base removal/installation
- Electronic speed control maintains constant speed under load. Fits compact routers models RT0700C and RT0701C
Check current price, package, and availability
WOOD’s 2024 review context quoted $325 for the Bosch and $200 for the Ridgid. Those are historical figures, not current prices. Product status, stock, package contents, seller, and compatibility have not been established here. Check those details for the exact model and suffix before comparing current offers; a kit name alone may not tell you which bases or accessories are included.

If you are considering a used Porter-Cable 890-series router, identify its exact model and serial number and compare them with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s January 24, 2006 recall notice. The notice covered about 70,000 routers because vibration could wear away motor-coil insulation and create a shock hazard. Listed ranges include 893PK and 895PK multibase kits with serial numbers 10001 through 68442. The notice excludes routers with a “T” above “PORTER+CABLE” on the nameplate.
