Check each knife evenly along its length with the compatible setting jig or the manual’s straightedge method. There is no universal knife-projection measurement: the correct reference and adjustment hardware vary by jointer.
Before adjusting the knives
Disconnect the jointer from power before removing the guard or exposing the cutterhead. The knives are sharp, so keep your fingers clear of the cutting edges throughout the work. Identify the machine’s make and model and consult its manual before loosening any fasteners.
- Use the manual for guard removal, cutterhead access, table positioning, knife projection, fastener sequence and any specified tightening guidance.
- Use only a setting jig compatible with the cutterhead and the method specified for that machine.
- Do not substitute a height figure or adjustment procedure from another jointer.
Choose the method specified for your jointer
Two documented approaches are a machine’s knife-setting jig and a straightedge referenced to the outfeed table. They are not interchangeable universal procedures: the correct reference surface and adjustment steps depend on the jointer’s design.
| Method | What it references | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Setting jig | The reference specified by the machine or jig instructions; the Grizzly G0809 manual describes using its supplied jig. | That the jig fits the cutterhead and is intended for the machine’s knife adjustment arrangement. |
| Straightedge | The outfeed table in the RIDGID JP06101 procedure. | The model manual’s contact and alignment criteria, including checks at both ends of each knife. |
Jointer adjustment hardware may use jack screws, springs or another arrangement. Woodcraft’s jointer tune-up guide discusses these differences and the use of straightedges and jigs. A purpose-made jig can make alignment easier, but check compatibility and the machine manual before using or buying one.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Fits 4"-8" Jointers & Planers】Designed for cutter heads from approx. 2-9/16" to 3-1/8" in diameter. To check fit, measure your cutter head diameter before ordering — the range covers common 4" to 8" benchtop and stationary machines.
- 【Magnetic Feet Hold Each Knife in Place】Magnets on the jig feet grip the cutter head and hold the fresh knife at a consistent height while you tighten the gib screws — hands free, no slipping, no lifting.
- 【More Consistent Than Straightedge Setups】Instead of balancing a straightedge and eyeballing each edge, the jig references off the cutter head itself, helping all knives sit at the same height — a key step toward smooth, even planing results.
- 【Steel Construction, Workshop-Ready】Built with a steel frame for everyday shop use. Bar dimensions: 5-7/8" long x 7/16" thick; max extended width 6-3/8"; round rod diameter 1/4" — sized to span common cutter heads without flex.
- 【Check Before You Order】This jig is sized for cutter heads between approx. 2-9/16" and 3-1/8" in diameter — machines outside this range will need a different setter. Wipe the magnetic feet clean of dust and chips before each use to keep the grip strong.
Set and check the knives
- Prepare the machine. Disconnect power and expose the cutterhead only as the manual directs. Position the tables as specified for the model; do not assume a table position from another procedure.
- Use the specified reference. Follow the manual’s jig procedure or straightedge procedure. For example, the RIDGID JP06101 instructions describe checking a knife against a straightedge across the outfeed table. The Grizzly G0809 manual describes inspection with its supplied setting jig.
- Check the full length of each knife. Where the manual calls for it, check both ends rather than relying on a single contact point. Compare the knives with one another and use the model’s own acceptance criteria. In the cited RIDGID procedure, the knife apex should just contact the straightedge; a gap or lifting the straightedge indicates a need to readjust under that procedure.
- Adjust and secure as directed. Use the adjustment hardware and fastener sequence in the manual. Tighten according to its instructions, then repeat the checks because securing a knife can affect its position.
- Finish safely. Rotate the cutterhead only as permitted by the manual. Reinstall the guard before reconnecting power.
Why even knife height matters
Knives that are not set evenly can make one knife do more than its share of the cutting. The Grizzly G0809 manual warns that a higher knife does more work and dulls faster, and describes correct setting as important to proper operation and knife life. Use that as a reason to check alignment carefully—not as a substitute for the height specification for your own machine.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a check does not meet the manual’s criteria
- If the straightedge or jig shows uneven contact, readjust using the model’s procedure and recheck after tightening.
- If the jig does not fit, or you cannot identify the correct reference surface or adjustment sequence, stop and obtain the instructions for the exact jointer model rather than improvising.
- If replacing knives, verify their dimensions and fit against the machine documentation; replacement blades are machine-specific.
Grizzly’s Jointer Pal support guide explains use of that jig with straight blades. Its instructions and any supplied jig apply to the relevant setup; they do not establish a universal method for other jointers.
