Epsom salt can help a plant recover from a confirmed magnesium deficiency, but it is not a general-purpose way to make healthy plants greener, bushier, or more productive. Test the soil before applying it: unnecessary magnesium can upset nutrient balance, and a yellow leaf alone does not prove a plant needs Epsom salt.
What Epsom salt can—and cannot—do
Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, so it supplies magnesium and sulfur. Plants need magnesium to make chlorophyll; when magnesium is genuinely deficient, correcting that shortage may help the plant recover. That does not mean adding Epsom salt improves growth when those nutrients are already adequate.
An Ask Extension response says purported benefits in home gardens generally lack scientific support unless soil is magnesium deficient. Washington State University Extension likewise reports no evidence that extra Epsom salt produces more leaves, flowers, or chlorophyll under normal conditions. The Royal Horticultural Society notes, “Most garden soils contain enough of these nutrients to support healthy plant growth.”
How to tell whether magnesium might be the problem
Look for a pattern, not just yellow leaves
Magnesium deficiency commonly causes yellowing between the veins while the veins remain green. It often appears first on older leaves. In advanced cases, leaves may develop reddish-brown tints or dark, necrotic spots. The RHS describes these symptoms; a University of Massachusetts greenhouse update dated May 1, 2026 describes a similar progression in greenhouse tomatoes.

Consider the growing conditions
Light, sandy, free-draining soils and acidic soils are more susceptible to magnesium deficiency. The RHS also notes that overuse of potassium-rich feeds can contribute. These conditions make deficiency more plausible, but they do not confirm it. Other nutrient problems can look similar; in greenhouse tomatoes, low substrate pH-related iron or manganese toxicity can mimic advanced magnesium deficiency.
Use a soil test to confirm
Have the soil tested before adding magnesium. Follow the test results and local extension recommendations, and avoid treating every case of yellowing as a magnesium shortage. If the plant is in a pot or greenhouse substrate, use guidance appropriate to that growing medium rather than assuming a garden-soil recommendation applies.

What to do if a deficiency is confirmed
Magnesium sulfate may be one option for correcting a confirmed shortage. Rates depend on the soil, crop, growing system, and local advice; the published figures below apply only to the specific contexts named by their sources.
| Guidance | Rate and context | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Royal Horticultural Society | 30 g/m² for long-term correction on light, free-draining soils | RHS guidance for those stated soil conditions; year not stated on the advice page. Follow local recommendations and the product label. |
| Royal Horticultural Society | 20 g/L as a foliar treatment, repeated two or three times a fortnight | RHS guidance, not a universal home-garden dose. The RHS warns that spraying in sunny weather can scorch leaves. |
| University of Massachusetts Extension | 2 lb per 100 gallons of water for correction in greenhouse tomato plants | Production-specific greenhouse guidance published in 2026; it is not a home-garden rate. |
Do not transfer one of these rates to a different crop or growing setup without checking local guidance. Use a product labeled for the intended use, follow its directions, and avoid repeated applications unless the test results or a qualified local recommendation call for them.

When Epsom salt can cause problems
Adding magnesium when soil already has enough can contribute to nutrient imbalance. Excess magnesium can interfere with calcium uptake, while unused nutrients may move into water. Repeated applications are particularly difficult to justify without evidence of deficiency. Foliar sprays can also scorch leaves, especially in sunny conditions, as the RHS cautions.
The practical risk is not limited to visible leaf damage: an unnecessary treatment may complicate nutrient management without delivering the greener growth a gardener wants. Test first rather than using Epsom salt as routine insurance.

Does Epsom salt prevent tomato blossom-end rot?
No. Epsom salt supplies magnesium, not calcium; an Ask Extension response on tomatoes states, “Epsom salts add magnesium, not calcium.” That response identifies inconsistent watering and root disturbance as more relevant management factors for blossom-end rot. Adding magnesium is not a substitute for addressing those conditions.
