Why Your Roomba Is Leaving Hair Clumps on the Floor—and How to Fix It

A full bin or hair-bound pickup parts can leave debris behind. Start with the bin, then clean the brushes and path according to your Roomba model.

If your Roomba is leaving hair or debris behind, start by emptying the bin, then check the filter, brushes, brush ends and vacuum path for buildup. A bin that fills quickly can cause collected debris to end up back on the floor; hair wrapped around the pickup parts can also interfere with cleaning. The right cleaning method depends on your Roomba model.

1. Empty the bin and check for overfilling

In homes with heavy pet shedding, hair can fill the bin before a cleaning run finishes. iRobot identifies this as a reason a Roomba may leave debris on the floor. Empty the bin and check its full indicator, whose design varies by model. If your model offers a setting to stop when the bin is full, using it can help prevent overfilling, but the robot may end its run early.

2. Clean the brushes and pickup path

Remove hair and debris from the main brushes and the parts they turn on. Depending on the model, that may include brush ends, caps, axles, pegs, bearings or other end pieces. Then follow the model’s instructions to clear the vacuum path and clean the bin and filter. iRobot recommends cleaning main brushes once a week, or twice a week in homes with pets. Its support guidance warns that excessive hair buildup in the brushes can permanently damage a Roomba.

Do not assume every part can be rinsed. For the s9 and the e, i, j and Combo 10 Max guidance covered by iRobot’s support pages, the filter is not designed to be washed or exposed to liquid. Where the model instructions permit rinsing the bin by hand in warm water, let it dry completely before putting it back.

3. Adjust the cleaning schedule and passes

If hair builds up between runs, more frequent cleaning can reduce the amount each run has to collect. iRobot recommends frequent scheduled cleaning as part of floor conditioning. Its recommendation of five runs per week applies to a specific scenario on its e/i/j/Combo 10 Max guidance: cleaning all rooms or using Imprint Smart Mapping Direct Room Cleaning. It is not a universal schedule for every model or household.

On supported models, two cleaning passes may help in homes with pets or during periodic deep cleaning. App options and availability depend on the robot model and software.

4. Check whether static is affecting carpet pickup

For the Roomba 900 series specifically, iRobot notes that dry, static-prone conditions may make pet hair harder to pick up from carpet. Its suggestions include raising relative humidity or using a carpet static-control product on affected areas. Do not spray or mist water or product on or near the Roomba. This is a model-specific possibility, not a general explanation for every Roomba leaving clumps.

5. Decide whether a part needs replacement

Clean and inspect the parts before replacing them. If a brush is worn or damaged, or pickup remains poor after model-specific care, check the exact robot model before buying a compatible replacement. iRobot recommends replacing main brushes every 6–12 months or as needed; this is a maintenance recommendation, not a guaranteed service life.
