Then compare the exact torch model’s rating and duty cycle, decide between air and water cooling, and confirm that its connections, controls, gas routing and consumables suit your machine. A welder’s maximum output is not, by itself, a safe torch rating.
What size TIG torch do I need?
Start with the torch manufacturer’s specifications for the specific model—not just a series number or a general “size.” Find its rated amperage for your intended current type (AC or DC) and the duty cycle attached to that rating. The torch needs to handle both the current and the amount of time you expect to weld at it.
Duty cycle is the share of a 10-minute period a torch can operate at a specified output without overloading, according to Miller. For example, a 60% duty cycle at a stated amperage means up to six minutes of operation at that output in the 10-minute period, followed by time for cooling. It does not mean the torch can run continuously at that amperage.
Published ratings vary by manufacturer and model. ITW Welding Singapore’s listed WP-series figures illustrate why both current type and duty cycle matter:

Other manufacturers’ ratings reinforce the point. TBi Industries lists its gas-cooled SR 26 P at 140 A AC and 200 A DC at 60% duty cycle, and its water-cooled SR 18 P at 225 A AC and 320 A DC at 100%. Those are manufacturer-listed examples, not ratings to transfer to similarly numbered torches from another brand. TBi Industries’ TIG machine torch specifications

Air-cooled or water-cooled: which should I use?
Cooling affects heat management, handling and the equipment you need. Miller explains that air-cooled torches use ambient air and shielding gas to dissipate heat, with more copper in their cables to help resist overheating. They have fewer parts and can be practical for outdoor or portable work. Water-cooled torches circulate coolant through the torch and back through the cable; they can be lighter and more flexible, but require a compatible cooling system and additional hoses.
Miller recommends water cooling for shop TIG work at 300 A or greater, while noting that some manufacturers offer 300 A air-cooled torches for field applications. Treat that as Miller’s application guidance, not a universal cutoff: the specific torch rating, duty cycle and work conditions decide whether it is suitable. - Complete 123-Piece Set:All necessary TIG torch accessories and consumables for WP-17, WP-18, and WP-26 torches.
- Precision Manufacturing:Accurately punched and cut for dependable performance.
- Enhanced Toughness:Outstanding plasticity, toughness, and crack resistance, especially at low temperatures.
- Heat-resistant and wear-resistant: High-quality alumina nozzles can withstand extreme temperatures, extending service life.
- Premium materials: Conductive parts are made of pure copper to ensure welding stability.
- Air-cooled: Consider it when simplicity, fewer components and portability are priorities, provided its rating and duty cycle cover your work.
- Water-cooled: Consider it for sustained or higher-current shop work when you have a compatible cooler and accept the hoses and added setup.
Cooling arrangements and ratings are equipment-specific. A PowerTIG 255EXT setup guide, for example, says its water-cooled torch must be used with a cooler and lists the largest air-cooled torch in that guide at 200 A DC and 175 A AC at 60% duty cycle. Those limits apply to the equipment described in that guide, not to all torches. PowerTIG 255EXT Setup Guide

- LIFT TIG Torch: Experience easy arc starts with the Lift-TIG feature of WP-17 Lift TIG torch. This 150 Amp, air-cooled TIG torch is designed for convenience, complete with a quick plug connector for 10-25mm² and a 5/8"-18 gas fitting.
- COMPATIBILITY: The WP-17FV 150-amp argon TIG torch is designed for the YESWELDER FLUX-135 PRO, MIG-140DS PRO, YWM-160, and ARC-165DS welders. It is also compatible with most machines featuring a 10-25 quick plug connector.
- EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE: Engineered with 8mm² premium copper wire, this torch efficiently disperses heat to withstand prolonged, high-amperage welding. This ensures consistently beautiful welding beads with every use.
- FIREPROOF & INSULTED: The fireproof, insulated jacket on the cable and hose shields the torch from sparks and spatter, ensuring durability and making it simple to clean.
- SUPERIOR QUALITY:The lift TIG torch cable features a tough material for added durability and flexibility.
- Current and mode: Identify the highest current you expect to use and whether the job uses AC or DC. Check the torch rating for that mode.
- Welding duration: Consider how long you will weld at or near that current. Match the torch’s duty cycle to the expected work pattern.
- Cooling and equipment: Decide whether air cooling meets the rating and use case or whether water cooling is appropriate and a compatible cooler is available.
- Handling: Compare torch and cable weight and flexibility against the positions, access and duration involved. Miller notes water-cooled torches can be lighter and more flexible; air-cooled cables use more copper.
- Worksite: Account for transport, setup and whether you need a simpler arrangement for outdoor or field work.
- Machine compatibility: Verify the exact power-source connector, gas routing, valve or switch, remote-control arrangement, cooling connections and consumables in the machine and torch specifications. Fittings and control arrangements are not universal.
A WP-17-style air-cooled torch may be a candidate when its published rating suits the application: ITW Welding Singapore lists the WP-17 at 150 A DC and 115 A AC at 60% duty cycle. Confirm the exact product’s ratings and machine compatibility; the series label alone is not enough to establish either. ITW Welding Singapore’s WP-series specifications
Does torch size determine tungsten and nozzle size?
No. Torch current rating and consumable selection are related setup questions, but a torch’s model rating does not prescribe one tungsten electrode or gas nozzle for every job. Follow the guidance for the specific torch, welding machine, material and process.

Kemppi’s MasterTig guide labels its TIG tables as general guidance based on WC20 (grey) tungsten and argon. Its DC table associates 5–80 A with 1.0 mm tungsten and 4/5 gas-nozzle sizes; 70–140 A with 1.6 mm tungsten; 140–230 A with 2.4 mm; and 225–330 A with 3.2 mm. The guide also provides corresponding nozzle diameters and argon flow ranges, as well as separate recommendations for AC. These are consumable recommendations in that guide, not replacements for a torch’s rated current or duty cycle. Kemppi MasterTig TIG guide tables, revision 2540
Quick Recap
What to verify before buying
- Write down your operating range: Note the highest expected amperage, AC or DC mode, and how continuously you expect to weld at that output.
- Check the exact torch specification: Confirm its rating and duty cycle in the relevant mode. Do not substitute a rating from another maker’s torch with a similar series number.
- Choose the cooling arrangement: Confirm that an air-cooled torch is rated for the work, or that the selected water-cooled torch has a compatible cooler and connections.
- Match it to the power source: Check the connector, gas routing and control configuration against both manuals and product specifications.
- Confirm consumables: Verify compatible tungsten, nozzles and other torch parts, then use the welding-machine and torch guidance for setup.
