Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To identify a screw, look at two separate features: the outside shape of its head and the drive profile in its center. Pan, countersunk, and truss describe head shapes; slotted, Phillips, Pozidriv, Torx, hex, and square describe the driver interface. Match the bit to the drive style and size—not to the head’s outline.
Head shape and drive type are different things
The head’s outside profile affects how the fastener bears against the material, how much clearance it needs, and whether it sits flush or proud. The drive is the recess or projection the tool engages. A screw can pair one head shape with different drives, so recognizing a countersunk or pan head does not tell you which screwdriver to use.
Terminology can be confusing: “flat head” is often used for a countersunk head, while “slotted” means the screw has a single straight drive slot. When describing or buying a fastener, identify the head shape and drive separately. A manufacturer’s machine-screw chart illustrates the range of possible combinations: McMaster-Carr’s screw head reference.
Common screw head shapes
Choose the head profile for the surface, clearance, desired flushness, and bearing area required by the design. These are common examples, not a complete universal taxonomy; follow the fastener specification for a particular job.

| Head shape | What it looks like | Typical use or effect |
|---|---|---|
| Pan | Flat top with rounded edges | A general-purpose machine-screw head that remains above the surface. |
| Countersunk | Conical underside, intended to sit flush when matched to a suitable countersink | Useful where a flush face is wanted, such as at a hinge. |
| Raised countersunk | Conical underside with a domed top | Provides a decorative raised finish while seating in a countersunk opening. |
| Truss | Wide, low dome | Spreads the bearing area over a wider surface. |
| Wafer | Very low, wide head | A low-profile option used on thin covers or sheet materials. |
| Hex washer | Hexagonal head with an integrated flange | Often used on sheet-metal enclosures; the flange provides a broader bearing surface. |
Common drive profiles and how to recognize them
Inspect the recess rather than guessing from the head’s overall shape. The outline below helps distinguish common profiles; specialized and security drives may look similar at a glance.
| Drive | How to recognize it | Driver and practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Slotted | One straight slot | Use a flat-blade driver that fits the slot. It is easy to identify but offers little self-centering, so alignment and controlled pressure matter. |
| Phillips (PH) | A cross-shaped recess | Use a Phillips bit in the correct size. Phillips is widespread, but it is not interchangeable with Pozidriv. |
| Pozidriv (PZ) | A cross with additional short ribs or marks between the main arms | Use a Pozidriv bit. The extra marks help distinguish it from Phillips; forcing the wrong cross bit can damage the recess. |
| Torx (T) | A six-lobed star with rounded lobes | Use the matching Torx bit size. Wiha describes this profile as transferring higher torque than classical profiles; that is a manufacturer description, not a guarantee of performance in every installation. |
| Security Torx | A Torx recess with a pin in the center | Requires a matching security bit with a hole for the pin. |
| Internal hex (hex socket or Allen) | A six-sided recess | Use a matching hex key or hex bit; size and fit still matter. |
| Square (Robertson) | A square recess | Use a matching square bit. Availability varies by region and application. |
Other profiles include Tri-Wing, a three-wing security drive, and Torq-Set, an offset-cross security drive. They are specialized rather than universal alternatives; confirm the exact profile before selecting a tool. See Wiha’s drive-type overview and the Phillips Screw Company drive-systems list.

Phillips and Pozidriv are not the same
Both have a cross-shaped appearance, which makes a quick glance misleading. Pozidriv adds short ribs between the arms of the main cross. Check for those extra marks, then use the bit marked for the matching system. Atlas Copco’s Pocket Guide to Screwdriving warns: “Use the right bits when mounting. Do not confuse with Pozidriv bits.” Its guidance is about choosing the correct bit, not treating the two drives as interchangeable. See the Atlas Copco Pocket Guide to Screwdriving.
How to identify the screw and choose a bit
- Look into the recess. Set aside the head’s outer shape and identify the drive: a single slot, cross, cross with extra ribs, six-lobed star, six-sided hex, square, or security variant.
- Choose the matching drive family. Do not treat Phillips and Pozidriv as substitutes. If the screw has a center pin or an unusual security pattern, identify that exact profile before selecting a tool.
- Match the size as well as the style. Seat the bit fully. It should fit closely without rocking; a bit that is too small or too large is more likely to slip or damage the recess.
- Keep the tool aligned and apply controlled pressure. If the bit slips or will not seat, stop. Recheck the drive type and size instead of forcing it.
A multi-bit screwdriver set can be useful when a job involves several common drive types, but the tips and sizes included vary by set. Check its contents against the fasteners you actually need to handle.

Which drive is best?
There is no single best profile for every fastener. The practical choice depends on whether the correct bit is available, how securely it seats, the access and clearance around the fastener, and whether tamper resistance is needed. Compare those factors for the job and use the drive specified for the fastener; do not swap profiles merely because two recesses look similar.
