How the SALt Lamp Runs on Salt Water—and What Its Claims Mean

The SALt lamp’s saltwater enabled an electrochemical reaction that powered an LED, while an electrode was consumed. Its 2015 runtime and phone-charging claims were not independently verified.

The SALt lamp described in 2015 used saltwater to help generate electricity for an LED. The water and salt were not a limitless fuel source: they formed the electrolyte in a galvanic cell, while an electrode was gradually consumed. Its often-repeated runtime and phone-charging figures were claims reported at the time, not independently verified performance results.

How does a lamp run on salt water?

SALt stands for Sustainable Alternative Lighting. In the 2015 descriptions, the lamp used two electrodes placed in saline water. The saltwater acted as the electrolyte, enabling electrochemical reactions between the electrodes to produce current for an LED. ScienceAlert’s 2015 report and Fast Company’s 2015 account describe this basic mechanism.

A galvanic cell converts chemical energy from reactions involving its electrodes into electrical energy. The saltwater supports that process; it is not, by itself, an inexhaustible source of power. Fast Company explains that an electrode—the anode—was gradually consumed and would eventually need replacement. The SALt lamp therefore was not a free-energy device.

What did the reported runtime and phone-charging claims mean?

Historical coverage repeated several figures, but attributed them to the developers rather than to independent tests.

Reported claim What the sources say
Eight hours of light ScienceAlert reported in 2015 that the lamp could provide eight hours of light from a glass of saltwater. This was a developer claim, not an independently validated runtime result. ScienceAlert, 29 July 2015.
About six months before electrode replacement Fast Company attributed to creator Aisa Mijeno the claim that the lamp could be used eight hours a day for about six months before its anode needed replacement. This was not an independently verified lifecycle test. Fast Company, 7 July 2015.
USB phone charging 2015 coverage said the lamp had a USB port and could charge a smartphone, but the reports do not establish charging speed, capacity, device compatibility, or independent charging results. ScienceAlert; Fast Company.

These figures are best understood as historical product claims. The available reports do not provide controlled runtime measurements, electrode-material specifications, verified lifecycle costs, or independent performance data. In particular, the USB claim is not enough to conclude that the lamp could provide a useful or fast phone charge.

What was the project intended to do?

Early coverage framed SALt as a lighting concept for communities with limited access to the electricity grid, including communities in the Philippines. ScienceAlert reported that initial distribution to Filipino communities was intended, while a report attributed to ABS-CBNnews.com said the lamp had not yet been mass-produced at the time. • 【No Fuel Required】 — Utilizes a safe and renewable energy source, eliminating the need for hazardous fuels or disposable batteries.

Those 2015 plans do not establish how many lamps were ultimately distributed, whether the original product remains available, or what outcomes users experienced. Aisa Mijeno was quoted in the rehosted report saying, “This isn’t just a product. It’s a social movement.” That statement describes the project’s social framing, not a technical performance result.

Is the original SALt lamp available today?

The 2015 reports document the concept and its intended direction, but they do not establish current availability of the original SALt lamp. A present-day merchant lists other saltwater-powered lamps and replacement plates, including plates it says work with its JL-MY-008 floating light. That listing is for an adjacent product, not evidence that it is the historical SALt lamp. Saltwaterlamps.com.

Is this the same as a Himalayan salt lamp?

No. The SALt lamp described in the reports was an LED powered by an electrochemical cell using saline water and electrodes. A decorative Himalayan salt lamp is a different product: it uses an electrical bulb and a piece of rock salt. The similar names do not indicate the same technology.

What should you check before relying on a saltwater lamp?

The available reports do not provide enough comparable, independently verified information to rank SALt against solar lanterns, rechargeable battery lamps, or kerosene lighting. For an emergency or off-grid purchase, compare the specific model’s verified performance and practical upkeep rather than relying on the SALt name or historic claims.

POLOROMI Saltwater Light Emergency Light, Power Outages 400-Hours Long-Lasting LED Light, No Charging Needed, Camping Light, Hurricane, Survival Kit,Night Fishing
  • 🧂POWERED BY SALT WATER - NO BATTERIES, NO CHARGING, NO FUEL - Just add a spoon of salt (6-15 g) and water to light it up. No batteries to die, no cords to charge, no fuel to run out - so it is always ready in a blackout, even years from now.
  • ♻️20-YEAR SHELF LIFE, READY WHEN YOU NEED IT - Store it in a drawer, car or go-bag for up to 20 years and it still works at full output. Lithium packs self-discharge and swell; alkaline cells leak and corrode contacts. This has nothing to degrade. When you finally need it, one lantern delivers up to 400 hours of light - about 33 nights at 12 hours a night, far more than any realistic outage.
  • ❄️WORKS WITH ANY WATER, ANYWHERE - Tap, well, lake, river, even sea water works, just add salt. One fill runs about 12 hours; drain and rinse if you will not use it for 8+ hours, then refill when you need it again. A true off-grid light source when the power is out and the shelves are empty.
  • ⛑️NO FLAME, NO FUMES, NO FIRE RISK - Unlike candles or gas lanterns, it produces no open flame, no smoke and no carbon monoxide, so it runs clean and cool indoors. A safer backup light to keep near the family during a storm or outage. Keep the salt water solution away from small children.
  • 📦COMPACT, DUAL-BRIGHTNESS AND SPLASH-RESISTANT - A pocketable 3 x 2 x 3.5 in (76 x 52 x 90 mm), 4.2 oz body with High and Eco modes from a single button. The housing shrugs off everyday splashes and kitchen water; it is not waterproof, so do not submerge it. Rated to work from -4 F to 131 F (-20 C to 55 C), so it still performs in a winter storm when battery lanterns fade in the cold.
