A small number of platforms support a purpose-built AC adapter, but that does not mean you can plug any cordless tool into a wall outlet—or run it from its charger.
Can you plug a cordless tool into the wall?
Only if the manufacturer specifies a compatible mains adapter for your exact tool. A cordless-only tool has no built-in mains connection; removing its battery leaves it without its designed power source. For example, DEWALT says its DCS7485 table saw cannot be plugged into mains power. That answer applies to that model, not every cordless tool. See DEWALT’s UAE support answer.
When a manufacturer-approved AC adapter works
There are exceptions designed for dual power. Metabo HPT’s ET36A is an AC adapter for specified 36V MultiVolt tools. The manufacturer says compatible tools accept either a 36V battery or the adapter, and lists supported models across categories including circular saws, reciprocating and miter saws, drills, impact drivers, grinders, rotary hammers and impact wrenches. Compatibility is limited to the models and platform the manufacturer identifies; check the ET36A product page and your tool’s manual.
For the ET36A specifically, Metabo HPT lists 120 V/60 Hz single-phase input, up to 2,000 W output and a 20-foot cord. These are product specifications, not general requirements for cordless tools. The page also says the adapter can be used with generators or extension cords; follow the adapter and tool instructions and local electrical requirements.

Why a charger or improvised power supply is not a substitute
A charger is not automatically a tool power supply. Do not plug a charger into the tool’s battery contacts, attach bare wires, or try a random AC/DC supply unless the manufacturer explicitly specifies that arrangement for the model. The cited product information identifies a purpose-built adapter for compatible tools; it does not approve those workarounds.
Battery systems can rely on electronics in the battery, tool, charger, or across more than one component. The Power Tool Institute explains that a battery adapter may bypass system components or interfere with the tool’s ability to assess battery condition and charge/discharge protections, creating overheating or fire risks. Its guidance recommends using batteries identified in the tool manufacturer’s manual or product literature. Read its battery-adapter safety guidance (revised Spring 2021).

Check voltage and platform compatibility
A source fitting physically does not establish that it is electrically compatible. Voltage and platform requirements still matter. DEWALT says XR FLEXVOLT tools have a 54V motor that requires a 54V battery; its UK support page says an 18V battery is not a substitute. Do not assume a different voltage, brand, or battery platform will work. Consult the manual for your exact model and market. DEWALT’s UK support answer.

- Exact model and platform: Is your tool named in the adapter’s compatibility list or manual?
- Approved source: Does the manufacturer specify a battery, a model-specific AC adapter, or both?
- Voltage and power: Does the specified source match the tool’s requirements?
- Work conditions: Outlet access may suit stationary, continuous work; a battery provides portability where cords are impractical.
- Practical cost: Compare an approved adapter with a compatible replacement battery or a corded version, if available. Prices vary and are not established here.
How to verify your tool
- Find the full model number on the tool’s label.
- Open the operator’s manual or the manufacturer’s support page for that model and your region.
- Look for an explicitly approved AC adapter or other alternative power source, including its exact model number and compatibility list.
- If no alternative source is specified, use the batteries listed by the manufacturer or choose a corded tool intended for mains power.
