Check those constraints first; then compare capacity and footprint rather than relying on a product’s headline slot count.
Choose a storage format for your shop
Start with four questions: Do the bits travel between locations? Do you want them visible at the router table? How many do you need to store? Which shank diameters must fit? Those answers point toward an enclosed case, an accessible rack, a drawer tray, or a molded organizer.
- Choose a case if bits need to stay together for transport or you prefer enclosed storage.
- Choose a rack if quick visibility and access at a fixed workstation matter most.
- Choose a tray if you have a suitable drawer or want to build a case around it.
- Choose a molded organizer if you want a compact, organized container and its inserts fit your bits.
Product specifications describe stated features and capacities; they do not establish comparative durability or independent performance.

Counts are not directly interchangeable: for example, CMT’s stated total includes router, drill, or boring bits, while Shaper lists collet slots separately from bit slots. Treat the WoodRiver moisture-control feature as a listed accessory, not proof of a tested rust-prevention result.

Check fit, capacity, and footprint before buying
Match the holders to your shanks
Sort your bits by shank diameter before comparing organizers. A holder may accept specific sizes, use interchangeable bushings, or be designed around a particular set of diameters. Do not assume that a system accommodating common sizes will fit every bit you own; confirm each size against the maker’s specifications.
Count the bits you actually need to store
Compare the stated capacity with your collection, but check what the count includes. A slot count may distinguish bits from collets, or combine router, drill, and boring bits. Leave room for the tools you plan to keep together instead of treating every published maximum as equivalent.

Measure the available space
For a case, compare its outside dimensions with your storage area and transport needs. For a tray, measure the drawer or the interior of the case it will occupy. For a rack, decide where it will mount and whether that position keeps the bits accessible without crowding the work area.

- Inventory the collection. Group bits by shank size and note how many need storage.
- Choose the location. Decide whether the bits will live in a portable case, on a mounted rack, or in a drawer or shop-made case.
- Verify dimensions and compatibility. Check the product’s stated capacity, supported shanks, outside dimensions, and any insert or mounting requirements against your actual setup.
- Organize for retrieval. Keep bits in their intended holders and arrange them so the size or profile you need is easy to identify.
A visible rack favors access; an enclosed case keeps the collection together; a tray makes use of drawer or custom-case space. The best fit is the one that suits your work location and collection without compromising shank compatibility.
