How Sublime’s “True-Zero” Cement Uses Electrolysis Instead of Furnaces

Sublime Systems uses electrochemistry to make cement ingredients without limestone calcination or fossil-fuel kiln heat. Here’s what its performance, project, and emissions evidence supports.

Sublime Systems makes cement ingredients by using ambient-temperature electrochemistry to break down calcium-silicate rocks, rather than heating limestone in a kiln. That route is designed to avoid the limestone-decomposition emissions and fossil-fuel kiln heat associated with ordinary Portland cement. It is a real manufacturing approach with a documented commercial placement, but “true zero” describes the company’s process-emissions goal—not proof that every lifecycle emission is zero or that the cement is approved for every structural use.

How does electrolysis make cement without furnaces?

Sublime’s process uses electrochemistry at ambient temperature to break down calcium-silicate rocks. The reaction produces reactive calcium and silicate materials, which are dried and blended into cement. The method aims to make the ingredients needed for cement without the conventional step of heating limestone in a high-temperature kiln. MIT’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering describes the process and explains that conventional lime production releases much of limestone’s carbon dioxide during heating; kiln heat can add emissions when supplied by fossil fuels. MIT, August 9, 2024.

That is the important distinction in “electrolysis, not furnaces”: electrochemistry supplies reactive cement ingredients in place of limestone calcination and fossil-fuel-fired kiln heat. It does not mean that cement is made without energy, inputs, transport, or emissions elsewhere in its supply chain.

What does “true zero carbon” mean here?

“True zero” is Sublime’s framing for avoiding the mineral-process and fossil-fuel emissions characteristic of conventional cement manufacture. The company’s 2023 explanation describes a goal of making cement at ambient temperature without fossil fuels or carbon capture. Sublime Systems, September 15, 2023.

It should not be read as an independently verified claim that the product has literally zero greenhouse-gas emissions across its full lifecycle. Electricity generation, upstream materials, transport, plant operations, and the boundaries used for lifecycle accounting all affect the result. The available sources do not establish a current, independently verified lifecycle assessment for commercial-scale production.

What performance evidence exists?

Sublime says its cement met ASTM C1157, a performance specification for hydraulic cement. The company describes the specification as addressing performance characteristics such as strength, flow, set time, and durability. MIT separately reported that the mixture had the same final strength and hardened phases as Portland cement and met an industry performance specification for building construction. These points indicate relevant performance testing; they do not establish approval for every recipe, design, exposure condition, building code, or jurisdiction.

In the One Boston Wharf case study, the specified 28-day strength was 4,000 psi, and the interior Sublime concrete mix averaged 5,500 psi at 28 days. That is a result for the particular concrete mix and project, not a universal cement specification. One Boston Wharf case study, 2025.

Where has Sublime Cement been used?

The documented first commercial application was at WS Development’s One Boston Wharf in Boston. Sublime Cement was used in lobby topping slabs and an exterior sidewalk. Boston Sand & Gravel conducted laboratory trials and field placements; the case study describes the work as non-structural and says standard equipment and industry practices were used. The project study reported lower global-warming-potential (GWP) figures for its Sublime concrete mixes than for the respective controls. The Sublime values used company lifecycle-assessment inputs, and the study said a binder-specific environmental product declaration (EPD) was not available. These figures therefore describe the compared concrete recipes and the study’s assumptions—not an independently established, product-wide reduction.

One Boston Wharf comparison Control mix Sublime mix Qualification
Interior topping slab 250 kgCO₂e/m³ 206 kgCO₂e/m³ Concrete-level project comparison; Sublime GWP used company LCA inputs, with no binder-specific EPD available.
Exterior sidewalk 322 kgCO₂e/m³ 217 kgCO₂e/m³ Concrete-level project comparison; Sublime GWP used company LCA inputs, with no binder-specific EPD available.

The case study reported GWP reductions ranging from 34% to 79% across the project’s compared mixes. That range belongs to those project comparisons and assumptions; it should not be generalized to other concrete recipes or uses. One Boston Wharf case study, 2025.

How large is production, and is the Holyoke plant operating?

Sublime reported that its Somerville pilot system could produce more than 100 tonnes of cement per year in 2023. In August 2024, MIT reported that the company was building a commercial plant in Holyoke, Massachusetts, with planned capacity of 30,000 tonnes per year and a target to come online as early as 2026. Those are reports from different dates and refer to different facilities and scales. The sources available through October 8, 2026 do not establish whether the Holyoke plant is currently commissioned or producing cement. Sublime Systems, 2023; MIT, August 9, 2024.

What should builders verify before specifying it?

Performance and emissions claims need to be checked against the intended project, not inferred from the process description or one pilot placement. Before specifying any low-carbon cement, compare the evidence that applies to the actual mix and jurisdiction:

  • Lifecycle basis: identify the assessment boundary, electricity source, feedstocks, transport assumptions, and whether the figures are binder-level or concrete-mix-level.
  • Mix performance: confirm strength, set, flow, durability, and exposure suitability for the specified application.
  • Standards and acceptance: establish which specification, design approvals, and local code or authority requirements apply; ASTM C1157 compliance alone does not answer every jurisdictional question.
  • Supply: confirm current production status, capacity, availability, and delivery arrangements for the project location.
  • Comparable emissions evidence: check whether the competing mixes use equivalent functional performance and whether product-specific EPDs are available.

The sources establish a promising alternative manufacturing route and a limited, non-structural commercial placement. They do not establish universal structural acceptance, full lifecycle zero emissions, or current commercial-scale output.
