Often, but not automatically. A revolving door can reduce the direct exchange of indoor and outdoor air at a busy entrance by keeping the opening more continuously partitioned than a conventional swing-door passage. How much energy that saves depends on the door’s seals, how it is used, pressure differences, weather, and building operation.
How a revolving door can reduce energy loss
Frequently used entrances can let conditioned air escape and outdoor air enter. Wind, the stack effect, and ventilation systems can create pressure differences that drive this exchange. The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory identifies infiltration control as an energy-saving opportunity in commercial buildings (PNNL, 2011).
A revolving door keeps the entrance divided into smaller compartments as people pass through, rather than leaving a full doorway open during each passage. That can limit direct air exchange. The total effect, however, includes at least two separate mechanisms: air leaking through gaps and seals, and air moved as the door rotates. Those should not be treated as the same thing.
What determines the result?
- Seals and gaps: Leakage through the door matters, particularly when pressure differences push air through openings. A door with worn or poorly fitted seals may deliver less benefit.
- Rotation and traffic: The turning wings move some air, while frequent use can reduce the time the entrance is left open. The balance depends on the door and how people use it.
- Share of people using the entrance: A revolving door can only limit exchange for people who actually use it. A nearby swing door used by many visitors may reduce the overall effect.
- Pressure and weather: Wind, temperature-driven stack effect, and mechanical ventilation can influence air movement through the entrance. Outdoor conditions and the building’s heating or cooling demand also affect the energy implications.
- Building operation: The entrance’s layout, use patterns, maintenance, and operating conditions shape performance; the presence of a revolving door alone does not establish a particular saving.
What studies have found—and what their numbers mean
Measurements of four doors in Montreal
A 2001 study by R. Zmeureanu, T. Stathopoulos, M. E. D. Schopmeijer, F. Siret, and J. Payer measured air leakage through four revolving doors at an institutional building in Montreal and assessed how seal quality affected annual heating costs. The authors describe pressure differences from wind, stack effect, and ventilation systems as factors in entrance infiltration. The paper’s abstract does not establish a universal savings percentage (ASCE, 2001).

Reduced-scale experiment on air moved by rotation
In a 2014 reduced-scale physical-model study, Lin Du, Radu Zmeureanu, and Ted Stathopoulos found that air displacement caused by rotation increased only slightly with rotation speed. Under that experiment’s conditions, its values were about two orders of magnitude below values then used in infiltration calculations. This finding concerns the rotation-related component in a reduced-scale experiment; it is not a field guarantee for every door or building (Du, Zmeureanu, and Stathopoulos, 2014).
Modeled scenarios at a university building
A 2006 report modeled annual energy-consumption reductions of 14.5% if revolving-door use reached 50%, 38.7% at 75% use, and 74.0% at full use. These are scenario results for the particular university building, its observed baseline, and the report’s assumptions—not expected savings for a typical installation (Johns Hopkins Program in Global Sustainability, 2006).

Historical estimate quoted by the EPA
In 1999, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency relayed manufacturer estimates of 15–20% cost savings for revolving doors in a four-season mid-Atlantic climate. That is a dated, attributed manufacturer estimate, not an independent finding that applies across buildings or climates (EPA, 1999).
Australian retrofit example
A 2013 Australian government factsheet identifies the Caroline Chisholm Centre in Canberra as an example of a revolving-door retrofit. The available factsheet summary does not state a numerical energy saving, so it supports the existence of a retrofit case, not a specific performance claim (Australian Department of the Environment and Energy, 2013).

Revolving doors, swing doors, and vestibules
Revolving doors and vestibules are both used to reduce air exchange at entrances, but the available sources do not establish one universal ranking or a single savings figure for choosing between them. A useful comparison looks at how much air leaks through seals and gaps, how much the door moves during operation, traffic volume and entrance choice, pressure differences, local heating and cooling demand, and the building’s installation and operating context.
For a building project, the relevant question is not simply whether a revolving door is present. It is whether the entrance as a whole limits unwanted air exchange under the conditions the building actually experiences. Seal condition and actual user behavior are part of that assessment, alongside wind, stack effect, ventilation, and climate.
