If your Rheem water softener is not softening, start with the model label, power and clock, salt level, bypass position, and programmed settings—not replacement parts. Rheem’s detailed troubleshooting chart applies to the RHS42, while the RHS32, RHW42, and RHS18 have their own controls and manuals. Use the procedure below to narrow down the cause safely, then follow the exact manual for your unit.
Identify your Rheem model before troubleshooting
Find the model and serial number on the unit’s label, then open the matching manual from Rheem’s owner-manual index. The index lists the Preferred RHS32, Preferred Plus RHS42, Preferred Platinum RHW42, and Preferred Compact RHS18. The detailed fault table discussed below is for the RHS42; do not assume its repair steps or display meanings apply to other models.
| Model | Model code | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| RHS32 | rH32 | Uses the RHS32 control and salt-monitor meanings. |
| RHS42 | rH42 | The cited installation, operation, and maintenance manual contains the detailed troubleshooting table. |
| RHW42 | rH42 | Shares the rH42 model code, but Wi-Fi status-light meanings differ from RHS32/RHS42 salt-monitor lights. |
| RHS18 / Preferred Compact | Not stated in the cited material | Use its own manual; the RHS42 troubleshooting chart is not a substitute. |
Rheem’s manual index and the RHS42 product page provide model-specific documentation. Confirm that the manual revision matches your unit where possible.
Run these checks before changing parts
- Check power and the clock. Confirm the unit’s external power connection is secure and the display is on. After an outage, the display may flash SET TIME or PRESENT TIME; set the clock using your model’s instructions. If the display is blank, check the safe external supply and household breaker or fuse. Leave control-board diagnosis to a service professional.
- Check salt level and the monitor. Inspect the salt in the brine tank rather than relying only on the indicator. Rheem recommends keeping salt between levels 2 and 5 on the brine-well scale; follow its salt-level programming instructions for your control layout. A monitor that has not been reset can show low salt even when salt is present.
- Look for a salt bridge. A hard crust can form above an empty space, making the tank appear full while water cannot reach the salt. Follow the bridge-removal directions in the exact manual. Do not pound the tank or force internal parts.
- Confirm the bypass is in service. A bypass left in the bypass position sends water around the softener. Check the handle or valve position against the unit’s manual; if the system uses a blending valve, confirm its setting as described there.
- Verify the model code and settings. Rheem maps RHS32 to rH32 and RHS42/RHW42 to rH42. The code tailors capacity, flow, and regeneration settings. Check the programmed code, clock, and hardness against the model-code instructions before investigating persistent hard water.
- Check performance after a manual recharge. Rheem’s operating check recommends verifying metering, salt, and bypass or blending-valve position, then initiating a manual recharge and testing at several faucets after it finishes. Rheem describes the recharge as taking about 2–2.5 hours. Its stated soft-water range is 0–3 grains per gallon (gpg), or 0–50 parts per million (ppm). See Rheem’s softener operating check.
Rheem water softener not softening
For the RHS42, Rheem lists an empty salt tank, power or control problems, a salt bridge, bypass position, incorrect time, hardness, or model code, hot-water use during regeneration, and a rise in source-water hardness as possible causes. The symptom alone does not identify the fault.

If the salt tank is empty
Refill with salt compatible with the unit, following the manual’s instructions, and start a manual recharge. On the RHS42, Rheem’s chart directs owners to refill the salt and use RECHARGE NOW. A recharge takes about 2–2.5 hours according to Rheem, so check the water after the cycle completes.
If water is hard only at certain times
Check the clock, hardness setting, and model code first. Rheem’s RHS42 manual also lists hot-water use during regeneration, increased raw-water hardness, leaks, or water use beyond the unit’s capacity as possible explanations. Test the water and settings rather than assuming the softener has failed.

The RHS42 manual cautions: “Avoid using hot water while the softener is regenerating, as the water heater will fill with hard water.”
If the softener has power but still produces hard water
Check metering, salt, bypass or blending-valve position, and the programmed values. Then recharge and test several faucets. If results remain outside Rheem’s stated soft-water range, consult the exact manual or a qualified service provider; do not infer a specific internal failure from a water test alone.

Rheem softener salt not going down
Salt can remain apparently unchanged when it is bridged or water is bypassing the unit. For the RHS42, check those two conditions first. A salt monitor reading is not the same as actual salt consumption, so inspect the tank and confirm the monitor is reset according to its control layout.
If the RHS42 brine tank has excess water, or water continues flowing to the drain during a soft-water cycle, the manual’s troubleshooting chart also identifies possible brine-draw, nozzle/venturi, drain, brine-float, pressure, or valve problems. These are not all resolved by adding salt; use the exact manual or arrange service rather than dismantling the valve assembly without model-specific guidance.

Rheem water softener flashing light or display message
Indicator meanings depend on the model. On RHS32/RHS42, Rheem says a steady light indicates normal operation; slow flashing indicates low salt or that the salt monitor needs resetting; CLn/CLEAn is a cleaner reminder; and rapid flashing with Err signals an electronics problem. The RHW42 has Wi-Fi status colors with different meanings, so do not interpret its light using the RHS32/RHS42 salt-monitor chart. See Rheem’s status-light guide.
CLn or CLEAn
On RHS32/RHS42, this is a cleaner reminder. The RHS42 manual identifies Rheem RHWSC for that reminder. Check the exact model manual and product compatibility before using cleaner.

Rapid flashing or Err
Treat a persistent Err or rapid-flashing fault as an electronics warning, not a prompt to guess at a part. Record the displayed code and model, then consult the matching manual or contact service.
Rheem softener error codes: when to call for service
On the RHS42, the manual associates E1, E3, and E4 with possible position-switch or wiring problems, a switch fault, valve torque, or motor fault; E5 indicates an electronic-control malfunction. The correct cause depends on the fault and unit, so confirm the model and exact code before taking action.
The RHS42 troubleshooting chart also covers motor stalling or clicking, motor and switch faults, wiring, valve problems, and control-board faults. Electrical, valve, and persistent leak issues merit model-specific service. Rheem’s owner resources include manuals, troubleshooting and maintenance material, and replacement-parts or accessories resources.
Iron in the water: what a softener can and cannot address
The RHS42 manual distinguishes clear-water iron from iron in softened water, for which resin-bed cleaning may be relevant. It also notes that bacterial or organically bound iron is not treated by the softener. Do not assume that every iron stain or iron test result can be fixed by adding salt or running a recharge; identify the iron form and follow the manual’s guidance.
Quick Recap
When troubleshooting is complete
- Use the manual for the exact model and display layout.
- Record the model, serial number, indicator state or error code, and whether the issue occurs constantly or only at certain times.
- Stop DIY troubleshooting and seek qualified service if the unit leaks, the drain runs outside expected regeneration, the motor stalls or clicks, or an electrical or valve error persists.
