That can help a crew spot a missing tool and return equipment to the right location. Arrange the tools and assign positions
Place the tools on the board and give each one a defined location. Consider how each tool will be picked up and returned, and leave enough room for its outline or label to remain recognizable. One practitioner account describes a smaller, point-of-use board limited to the tools needed there; that is an example, not a rule for every shop.

Choose a board and compatible holders
Pegboard is one suitable substrate, and tool-storage boards more broadly can serve the same purpose. Select the board and holders to suit the tools’ size, shape, and weight, as well as the intended installation location. Check that hooks or holders fit both the board and the tools. Mark each tool’s home
Accuform describes applying colored silhouette shapes. Visual Workplace Inc. describes tracing an item, cutting the shape from adhesive shadow material, and placing it in its designated location; its catalog identifies pegboard as a surface for this material. For a simple homemade version, you can also draw an outline or use a clear label. The sources do not compare the durability of hand-drawn marks with adhesive vinyl silhouettes.

Label and keep the layout current
A practitioner account describes labeling both tools and outlines. If the station’s tool set changes, update the marked positions so the board still shows where each current tool belongs.
