Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For most desert cacti, success comes down to four things: strong light, a pot with a drainage hole, a gritty mix that lets water escape, and thorough watering only after the mix has dried during active growth. Water much less during a cool, dim winter rest. First identify your plant if you can: tropical holiday cacti such as Christmas cactus need more filtered light and should not be kept dry while budding or flowering.
Start by identifying which kind of cactus you have
“Cactus” covers plants from very different habitats. Most familiar spiny cacti are adapted to arid conditions, while holiday cacti such as Schlumbergera, Epiphyllum, and Rhipsalis are tropical plants that grow naturally in more sheltered conditions. Their care differs, especially for light and watering. The University of Minnesota Extension notes that the cactus family includes nearly 2,000 species and, with one exception, all are native to the Americas (University of Minnesota Extension).
| Care factor | Arid-climate cactus | Tropical holiday cactus |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Bright, sunny conditions are generally suitable (Nebraska Extension). | Bright indirect light or filtered sun is preferred (RHS; Iowa State University Extension and Outreach). |
| Water | Water thoroughly during active growth after the mix dries; reduce watering substantially during cool winter dormancy (University of Minnesota Extension; Nebraska Extension). | Needs more regular moisture than a desert cactus, especially while budding and flowering, but should not sit in water (Iowa State University Extension and Outreach). |
| Growing medium | Use a freely draining, gritty mix (University of Minnesota Extension; RHS). | Use a well-drained medium; a special cactus mix is not required, according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach (Iowa State University Extension and Outreach). |
| Seasonal rest and flowering | A cool, dry rest may help many arid types flower, but blooming depends on species and maturity (RHS; Nebraska Extension). | Do not apply the same dry-rest watering rule while buds or flowers are developing (Iowa State University Extension and Outreach). |
If you cannot identify the plant, use the drainage guidance below, avoid extremes, and watch how the plant responds. Exact watering intervals and cold tolerance cannot be safely generalized across all cactus species.
How much sunlight does a cactus need?
For arid-climate cacti
Choose a bright, sunny indoor location. Nebraska Extension lists south-, southwest-, and west-facing windows as suitable examples. Rotate the pot occasionally if growth leans toward the window. If you move the plant outdoors for summer, do it gradually: Nebraska Extension recommends at least a couple of weeks in partial sun so the cactus can acclimate and is less likely to sunburn (Nebraska Extension).

For holiday cacti
Christmas cactus and related tropical types generally prefer bright indirect light or filtered sun, rather than the strongest direct exposure suited to many desert cacti. The RHS identifies Schlumbergera, Epiphyllum, and Rhipsalis as exceptions that prefer semi-shade or filtered light (RHS). Outdoor placement and frost tolerance depend on species and local climate; UF/IFAS advises protecting cacti from frost (UF/IFAS Extension).
What soil and pot should you use?
Use a growing medium that lets water move through instead of lingering around the roots, and choose a pot with a drainage hole. Do not rely on a layer of gravel in the bottom of a pot as a substitute: excess water needs an open route out of the container.

Published recipes vary, so there is no single formula to apply to every cactus. The University of Minnesota Extension suggests a home mix of one part potting soil to one part coarse sand; the RHS describes peat-free gritty compost and, in a specific UK compost example, suggests up to 30% grit or fine gravel (University of Minnesota Extension; RHS). The shared practical test is drainage. Deborah L. Brown of University of Minnesota Extension writes: “A good test is to moisten the mixture and squeeze it in your hand. On release, the soil should fall apart.”
How often should you water a cactus?
During active growth
In spring and summer, water an arid-climate cactus thoroughly, then let all excess water drain away. Check the growing medium before watering again. Nebraska Extension uses the top inch of medium as a practical cue; University of Minnesota Extension advises letting the soil dry completely between waterings (Nebraska Extension; University of Minnesota Extension). The interval depends on light, temperature, pot size, and the mix, so a fixed day-by-day schedule is unreliable.

Succulents' leaves are very fragile and may fall off during shipping. If your plant is missing some leaves upon arrival, just know they will grow back over time
During winter dormancy
When an arid cactus is in a cool, low-light winter rest, reduce watering sharply. University of Minnesota Extension advises watering only enough to prevent shrinking and withering; Nebraska Extension recommends a cool, bright dormant period with no water unless the plant begins to shrivel (University of Minnesota Extension; Nebraska Extension). Do not leave the plant standing in runoff.
For holiday cacti
Holiday cacti need a different approach from desert types. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommends bright indirect light and well-drained soil, and notes that during budding and flowering the plant should not be kept dry because dryness can cause buds or flowers to drop (Iowa State University Extension and Outreach).

Should you fertilize a cactus?
Cacti generally have low nutrient needs. University of Minnesota Extension recommends feeding once or twice a year in late spring or summer, while the plant is actively growing, with houseplant fertilizer higher in phosphorus than nitrogen at half strength (University of Minnesota Extension). Treat that as a regional recommendation, not a universal formula: follow the product label and account for the plant’s species and growing conditions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you repot a cactus?
Repot when roots appear through the drainage holes or the plant has outgrown its container. UF/IFAS gives two to four years as a typical interval, but root crowding and growth are more useful cues than a calendar. The extension recommends repotting as active spring growth begins, using a slightly larger container and coarse, well-drained mix (UF/IFAS Extension).

- INCLUDED IN PURCHASE | (5) assorted cactus varieties in 2" pot. Each plant may vary from pictures shown as succulents are hand selected based on season, size, health, and readiness.
- WATERING NEEDS | Cacti are very sensitive to overwatering and damp soil can cause root rot. Dry out soil completely between waterings. Recommended amount is once every two weeks. Tip: top inch of soil should feel dry before watering again.
- FERTILIZING NEEDS | Fertilize every two to four weeks during spring and summer. Withhold fertilizer during the fall and winter months.
- SOIL | SUN | POTTING | Use well-draining soil. Regular potting soil or dirt will not work. Use cactus soil/mix or potting soil with sand/pumice/perlite. Approximately 6 hours of sun per day. Gradually give plant more sunlight each day.
- CUSTOMER ASSURANCE | We strive to provide the highest quality plants delivered. If plants arrive damaged or unhealthy, we will issue a full refund or replace your plant.
- Protect your hands and use long barbecue tongs to lift a spiny plant. UF/IFAS cautions that thick gloves may not protect against stout spines.
- Ease the cactus from its pot and inspect the roots. Remove damaged or rotting roots with a clean tool.
- Set it in the new pot at the same depth it was growing before; do not bury the stem deeper.
- Fill around the roots with coarse, well-drained mix and allow the plant to settle.
- Wait a few days before watering, as UF/IFAS advises.
Can you propagate a cactus from a cutting?
Some cacti can be propagated from stem cuttings. University of Minnesota Extension advises allowing the cut surface to air-dry, then placing the cutting in slightly moistened sterile sand. Water sparingly until roots form, then transfer it to the regular growing mix (University of Minnesota Extension). Plant-specific propagation methods can differ, so identify the cactus before treating this as a universal method.
What helps a cactus flower?
For many arid cacti, strong light during growth and a cooler, drier winter rest may help encourage flowering. It is not a guarantee: flowering depends on the species and the plant’s maturity, and a generic care schedule cannot promise a bloom date. Do not apply dry-rest advice to a holiday cactus while buds or flowers are developing; keeping it too dry then can cause them to drop (RHS; Nebraska Extension; Iowa State University Extension and Outreach).
Quick Recap
How do you prevent common cactus problems?
- Soft, rotting growth: Check whether the soil stays wet or water collects in the outer pot. Improve drainage, empty standing water, and adjust watering to the season. Wet soil and standing water are associated with root rot and decay in the cited extension guidance (University of Minnesota Extension; UF/IFAS Extension; Iowa State University Extension and Outreach).
- Mealybugs or scale: University of Minnesota Extension suggests removing visible pests with cotton swabs dipped in alcohol (University of Minnesota Extension).
- Sunburn after a move: Acclimate a cactus gradually when increasing direct sun, especially when moving it outdoors for summer (Nebraska Extension).
- Uncertain species or hardiness: Get a reliable identification before making decisions about outdoor exposure, frost, or species-specific care. Cacti vary too much for one general article to establish exact hardiness limits (RHS; UC Statewide IPM Program).
