Plectranthus care depends on the species: some grow upright, others trail, and their preferred light, pruning and propagation methods differ. Check the botanical name on the label, then give the plant bright but moderated light, a freely draining growing medium and watering suited to its conditions. Treat tender types as frost-sensitive.

Identify your Plectranthus before choosing a care routine

Plectranthus is a diverse genus, not a single care type. For example, P. caninus is an upright tender perennial, while P. verticillatus and P. oertendahlii have trailing habits. Those differences affect where to grow each plant and how to shape or propagate it. Use the botanical name on the plant label to look up the relevant profile rather than assuming one schedule fits the genus.

What light does Plectranthus need?

Follow the needs of the named species and avoid assuming that more direct sun is always better. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommends filtered light under glass for P. caninus and partial shade for P. verticillatus. It lists P. oertendahlii for glasshouse or sheltered, frost-free cultivation.

High, unshaded light can bleach foliage and reduce flowering and plant quality in the production conditions described by University of Florida IFAS. That observation is not a universal light threshold for every Plectranthus, but it is a reason to watch for leaf bleaching and adjust exposure if it appears.

Choose a well-drained growing medium

Good drainage is a consistent starting point across the cited care profiles. For P. caninus grown under glass, the RHS recommends peat-free potting compost; its profile also describes outdoor soil as humus-rich and moist but well-drained. For containers, the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) advises a light, well-drained, humus-rich medium.

Use a container with drainage holes so excess water can escape. Match the mix to the species and growing setup rather than relying on a heavy medium that stays wet.

How often should you water Plectranthus?

There is no single watering interval established for the whole genus. The RHS says to water P. caninus freely during active growth, while SANBI’s container guidance is to water when the growing medium begins to dry. These instructions apply to different care contexts, not a universal schedule.

Check the medium and the plant’s growing conditions, and adjust watering accordingly. A container, the amount of light it receives and the species all affect how quickly the medium dries. Aim to meet the named plant’s needs while keeping it in a mix that drains freely.

  • GUARANTEED QUALITY: Hand picked and properly cut healthy stems that will grow. Bottom leaves removed to prep the nodes that need to be buried in dirt or placed in water to root. Growth starts from the nodes. Plant in compact manner for a lush effect.
  • PLANT VARIETY: This variety features thick, succulent-like stems and velvety green foliage and lavender-shade clustered flowers. Leaves grow up to over 3 ft long in sprawling, mounding, or spreading manner. Easy to grow and low-maintenance.
  • NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH THE VICKS PLANT (Plectranthus Tormentosa). The plant in this listing: (1) Has strong oregano-like aroma, (2) generally has larger and more robust leaves, often having a distinct tapering point, (3) Has leaves that have noticeably sharp, serrated, or tooth-like margin (like mint or lemon balm) (4) Has thicker, often succulent, and hairy stems, and (5) is a large, sprawling, or woody-based shrub.
  • USES: Used as groundcover or container plant. In cooking, it is used fresh or dried as substitute for oregano or sage. Dried leaves can be steeped to make a flavorful tea. As an herb, it is traditionally used for pain relief and treating skin conditions, among others.
  • CAREFUL & CONSCIENTIOUSLY PACKAGED FOR SHIPPING: We properly package our plants for shipping using adequate packaging to protect them and minimizing waste at the same time.

Can Plectranthus grow outdoors?

Some can, but outdoor suitability depends on the species and local frost conditions. The RHS recommends planting P. caninus outside after the last frosts. It describes P. oertendahlii as needing a sheltered, frost-free environment.

P. scutellarioides is described as a tender tropical perennial by Missouri Botanical Garden. Its guidance about treating it as an annual or bringing pots indoors for winter applies to St. Louis conditions; local climate and frost dates may differ. Check the species profile and your local conditions before leaving a tender plant outdoors.

How to pinch, prune and propagate Plectranthus

Shaping and propagation are species-specific. The RHS recommends pinching young shoots or growing tips of P. caninus and pruning young P. verticillatus to encourage bushier growth. Its profile for P. oertendahlii says pruning is not required.

Choose a propagation method listed for the plant you have:

  • P. caninus: cuttings.
  • P. verticillatus: seed or stem-tip cuttings.
  • P. oertendahlii: seed or division.

These are the methods named in the RHS profiles; they should not be treated as equally suitable for every species in the genus.

Compare species when choosing a plant

Before buying or placing a Plectranthus, compare the named plant’s habit, light needs, intended growing place and frost protection requirements. Also consider whether its listed propagation method and pruning needs suit your plans.
