13 Low-Maintenance Shrubs That Practically Take Care of Themselves

Low-maintenance shrubs still need the right site and care while establishing. Learn how to assess ninebark and other dry-site candidates for your yard.

Low-maintenance shrubs can reduce routine watering and pruning once they are established, but none can take care of itself completely. Ninebark is the strongest-supported example: Iowa State University Extension says it needs minimal care after establishment and tolerates periodic drought. Other shrubs—including spirea, potentilla, viburnum and lilac—may suit dry sites, but the right choices depend on your region, soil, light and available space.

Because no growing region or hardiness zone is specified, treat the plants below as candidates to investigate, not a universal ranking. Check local extension guidance and the shrub’s mature size before buying.

What “low maintenance” means for shrubs

It means fewer recurring tasks after a shrub has settled into a suitable site—not zero care. Newly planted shrubs need attention while their roots establish, and even established plants benefit from occasional checks for damage, crowding or unsuitable growing conditions. A shrub selected for the wrong soil, light or space can create more work than a better-matched choice.

Dry-site tolerance also does not mean a shrub never needs water. University of Minnesota Extension’s guidance on planting and transplanting trees and shrubs addresses establishment, while its shrubs for dry soil list includes ninebark, spirea, potentilla, viburnum and lilac. Use local guidance to decide whether a particular plant fits your conditions.

13 shrubs to consider for a lower-maintenance landscape

The available extension guidance supports these as starting points, not as thirteen equally documented, universally easy plants. The first five are named in Minnesota Extension’s dry-soil guidance; the remaining entries are ways to compare suitable shrubs rather than a claim that each species is validated for every region. Confirm local suitability before choosing.

  1. Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius): The best-supported option here. Iowa State University Extension describes it as a deciduous shrub that needs minimal maintenance once established and tolerates periodic drought. Its exfoliating bark adds visual interest. Avoid frequent hard renovation pruning if you want to retain the bark’s prominence. Iowa State’s ninebark guidance explains care and pruning.
  2. Spirea: Minnesota Extension includes spirea among shrubs for dry soil. Check the specific species or cultivar’s mature size, local hardiness and flowering habit; the broad category alone does not settle those questions.
  3. Potentilla: Also listed by Minnesota Extension for dry soil. Verify that the selected plant suits your site’s sun, drainage and space.
  4. Viburnum: Minnesota Extension includes viburnum in its dry-soil shrub guidance. The name covers many kinds, so check the particular selection’s mature size and site requirements.
  5. Lilac: Lilac appears on Minnesota Extension’s dry-soil list. Confirm the variety’s size and local fit, and account for flowering when planning any pruning.
  6. A locally suitable native shrub: Illinois Extension explains that native shrubs matched to their preferred light and soil can perform as well as or better than exotic varieties for low maintenance and drought resistance. “Native” alone does not guarantee effortless care; match the plant to the site. Illinois Extension’s native-shrub guidance discusses this principle.
  7. A shrub suited to your site’s light: Compare choices that fit the actual sun or shade exposure rather than selecting by a general low-care label. A mismatch can mean poor growth and extra intervention.
  8. A shrub suited to your soil moisture: Consider how quickly the planting area drains and whether it stays dry or holds moisture. A dry-site recommendation is not automatically appropriate for a wet or poorly drained bed.
  9. A shrub that fits its mature footprint: Choose a plant whose expected height and spread fit the space. Allowing room for mature growth can reduce the need for repeated size-control pruning.
  10. An evergreen option, if year-round structure matters: Decide whether retaining foliage through the year is more important than seasonal flowers, leaves or bark. Verify that an evergreen candidate is suitable for your local conditions.
  11. A flowering shrub suited to your preferred pruning schedule: Check whether it flowers on old or new wood before choosing. That distinction affects when pruning is least likely to remove future flowers.
  12. A shrub chosen for seasonal foliage or bark: If seasonal color or textured bark is a priority, compare those features with the plant’s size and care needs. Ninebark is one example of a shrub valued for exfoliating bark.
  13. A regionally recommended shrub: Ask a local extension service or native-plant resource for options suited to your hardiness range and growing conditions. Regional advice is more useful than treating a generic list as a guarantee.

How to choose the right shrub for your yard

Use these checks before buying. They help narrow the candidates without assuming that every plant labeled drought-tolerant or low-maintenance will work in every landscape.

How to prune without creating extra work

Prune according to flowering time

Pruning at the wrong time can remove flower buds. Penn State Extension’s rule of thumb is to prune spring-flowering shrubs that bloom on old wood soon after flowering. Many shrubs that flower on new wood in summer or fall can be pruned in late winter or early spring. Check the flowering habit of the particular shrub before cutting. Penn State Extension’s flowering-shrub pruning guidance explains the distinction.

Use selective cuts on established ninebark

Iowa State recommends light annual pruning to remove dead, damaged or crossing stems and selectively thin older wood. For gradual renewal, it describes removing one-third of the oldest stems at ground level each year over three years. Frequent renovation pruning reduces the prominence of ninebark’s exfoliating bark, so avoid hard, routine shaping if that feature matters to you.

What to check before planting

  • Confirm that the shrub suits your local climate and the planting site’s light, soil and drainage.
  • Allow for the plant’s mature height and spread, not just its size in a nursery pot.
  • Plan to care for the shrub while it establishes; drought tolerance after establishment does not eliminate that need.
  • Find out whether it flowers on old or new wood so future pruning does not remove buds unnecessarily.
  • Use local extension advice to narrow the choices rather than relying on a universal low-maintenance list.
