Use the owner’s manual for your exact oven model: settings, cycle times, and rack rules vary. Before starting a high-temperature self-clean cycle, remove items the manual does not approve, wipe away loose soil, keep the room ventilated, and leave the door gasket undisturbed. Let the oven cool and unlock on its own before wiping out the ash.
Before you start: prepare the oven and kitchen
- Check the manual for your exact model. Follow its directions for the control sequence, cycle length, rack position, and whether steam-clean is available. Instructions for one model family do not necessarily apply to another.
- Remove items from the oven. Take out pans, bakeware, utensils, probes, foil, silicone mats or liners, and other stored items. Remove oven racks unless the manual specifically says they are safe to leave in; racks can discolor or warp during high-heat cleaning. Remove plastic items from the cooktop and empty the storage drawer if the range manual directs you to do so.
- Wipe away loose food and spills. Removing excess soil can help limit smoke. Some models also require hand-cleaning the door edge or a narrow strip around the cavity frame because the cycle does not clean those areas. Follow the manual, and keep liquid out of frame slots.
- Leave the door seal alone. Do not clean, rub, bend, or move the gasket. The Whirlpool guidance states: “Do not clean, rub, damage, or move the oven door gasket.”
- Protect airflow and people. Ventilate the kitchen and make sure oven vents are not blocked. Keep children away from the oven. Move birds to another closed, well-ventilated room.
Do not use commercial oven cleaner on self-clean surfaces or put foil or silicone liner products in the oven during the cycle; GE advises against these products.
How to run a high-temperature self-clean cycle
- Close the oven door fully.
- Select the self-clean setting and start the cycle using the controls specified in your model’s manual. The door locks during high-heat cleaning.
- Stay nearby and do not touch the oven while it is operating. Whirlpool advises against leaving the oven unattended during self-cleaning.
- Wait for the oven to cool and the lock to release naturally. Do not force the door open, including if you cancel a cycle; a hot oven may remain locked.
Smoke or flames
A small amount of smoke can occur. GE says excessive smoke is often associated with heavy grease or soil, or an item left in the oven; ventilate the room. If flames occur, GE advises switching the oven off and allowing at least an hour to cool before correcting the cause. Restart only after the cause has been addressed. Follow your model’s manual and local emergency guidance if there is a fire concern.
How long does self-cleaning take?
There is no single cycle time for all ovens. Use the timing in your own manual. For example, the Whirlpool W11728268 owner manual, dated January 2025, specifies an adjustable 2–4-hour cycle for the models it covers: two hours for light soil, three for medium, and four for heavy soil. Its last 30 minutes are for cooldown. This is model-family guidance, not a universal schedule.

GE says its covered models may take 30–90 minutes to cool after cleaning; the lock or indicator light can remain on during cooldown. Whirlpool notes that cooling time is included in some cycles. Do not open the door until the oven is fully cool and the lock releases.
After the cycle: let the oven cool, then wipe it out
Once the oven is completely cool and unlocked, wipe away ash with a damp cloth. Do not put a cool damp cloth on hot inner-door glass. A microfiber cloth is optional; the manufacturers do not require a particular cloth or brand.

Some porcelain finish changes and popping sounds as the cavity heats and cools are described as normal for the Whirlpool model family covered by its guidance. Follow your own manual if you notice anything unusual.
