A long-range pole grabber—also called a reacher grabber, pickup-and-reach tool, or litter picker—lets you retrieve items beyond ordinary arm’s reach. Choose by the actual tool length, the shape of its gripping head, the task, and any load limit stated for that specific model; “long range” is not a standard length.
How long should a pole grabber be?
Start with the distance you need to reach, then compare it with the manufacturer’s stated tool length. Product examples range from 32 inches to 42 inches, with other listings using metric measurements. These figures describe different models, not a common industry definition of “long range.”
| Model | Stated length | Published features or intended use |
|---|---|---|
| Unger Total Reach Grabber, model 978490 | 32 in. | Rotating head, magnet, and utility hook; for retrieving objects without bending or climbing. |
| Unger Grabber Plus, model 966470 | 32 in. | Rotating head, magnet, and ergonomic trigger grip. |
| Harbor Freight EZ Reach and Grab, SKU 62752 | Nearly 3 ft. | Suction-cup grippers; manufacturer-stated capacity up to 5 lb. The product page is marked in-store only. |
| Harbor Freight Pickup and Reach Tool, SKU 61413 | 36 in. | Steel tubing and ABS reinforced material; listed weight 1 lb. |
| Kärcher Litter Picker, part 6.999-113.0 | 100 cm | 0.3 kg; intended for coarse dirt. |
| Spear & Jackson Litter Picker | 1070 mm (42 in.) | Claw-like collecting action and locking catch. |
| Vive Suction Cup Reacher Grabber | 32 in. | 4.5-inch jaw; manufacturer-stated capacity up to 5 lb. |
| M2 Professional 40-inch Litter Grabber | 40 in. | Aluminum frame; marketed for commercial and outdoor collection. |
Reach alone does not establish suitability. Consider the distance to the object, the room available to maneuver the handle, and whether you can keep the jaws aligned with the item. Product pages provide specifications, not independent head-to-head performance tests.
What kind of gripping head suits the task?
Small or smooth objects
Head design can matter as much as length. Harbor Freight describes suction-cup grippers on its EZ Reach and Grab, while Unger lists a rotating head on its Total Reach Grabber and Grabber Plus. A rotating head can be positioned for the target; the Unger Total Reach Grabber also lists a magnet and utility hook. Check the maker’s description for the particular model rather than assuming every grabber has the same attachments.

Litter and coarse debris
Litter-picker descriptions emphasize collecting debris. Kärcher identifies its 100 cm model for coarse dirt, and Spear & Jackson describes a claw-like collecting action with a locking catch. For outdoor cleanup, consider whether the head can engage the material you expect to pick up; the cited descriptions do not establish performance on every kind of litter.
Reacher grabber or litter picker?
The names often signal the intended task, but they do not establish a formal product category. A consumer reacher grabber is described for retrieving dropped or high-shelf items; litter-picker listings focus on litter or coarse debris. Compare the gripping mechanism and stated use, not just the name. These tools should not be assumed to safely handle heavy, sharp, hot, hazardous, or unstable objects unless the manufacturer explicitly says so.

Check weight and load capacity model by model
Only apply a load limit to the exact model for which the maker states it. Harbor Freight lists up to 5 lb for its nearly three-foot EZ Reach and Grab; Vive also states up to 5 lb for its 32-inch suction-cup model. Those ratings do not establish the capacity of other grabbers, including models described with terms such as “professional” or “heavy duty.”
Weight can also affect handling over a long reach. Harbor Freight lists its 36-inch Pickup and Reach Tool at 1 lb, and Kärcher lists its 100 cm litter picker at 0.3 kg. Other product pages in this comparison do not state a weight.

A practical checklist before choosing
- Measure the reach you need: compare the target location with the actual stated tool length.
- Match the head to the object: look for the listed jaw, suction cup, claw, magnet, hook, or rotating head that suits the task.
- Check material and weight: use the listed construction and weight when provided; do not infer either from a product name.
- Read the exact load rating: if the manufacturer does not state a capacity for that model, treat it as not stated—not as equivalent to another tool’s rating.
- Confirm availability: product listings can change; Harbor Freight marks the cited EZ Reach and Grab page as in-store only.
