One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo hook up an RV to campground power, first confirm whether it uses 30-amp or 50-amp service, check that the pedestal and cord are suitable and undamaged, switch breakers off as your owner’s manual directs, and connect only when the electrical supply tests correctly. Follow the manual for your specific RV: breaker order, cord setup and permitted adapters can vary by model.
Before you connect: identify the RV and the power source
Check the RV owner’s manual and identify its shore-power rating. A 30-amp RV and a 50-amp RV use different service configurations, and the manual determines which cords and adapters are permitted. Then compare the RV’s inlet and cord with the campground pedestal receptacle. A plug that physically fits is not, by itself, proof that the supply is suitable.
Campground outlets can provide less capacity than an RV is designed to use. An adapter may let a compatible plug connect to a different receptacle, but it does not increase the pedestal’s capacity. The available power is limited by the supply, and the RV’s own appliance use and circuit limits still apply.
How 30-amp and 50-amp service differ
| Service | Configuration and published capacity | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 30 amp | One 120-volt leg, with a maximum current flow of 30 amperes. Airstream Support describes the capacity as about 3,600 watts at 120 volts. | Confirm that the RV is configured for 30-amp service and that the cord, inlet and pedestal receptacle match or are connected only with an adapter permitted by the owner’s manual. |
| 50 amp | Two 120-volt legs, with a maximum of 50 amperes per leg. Airstream Support describes the capacity as about 12,000 watts across both legs. | Confirm the RV’s 50-amp configuration and compatible cord and receptacle. Do not assume every 50-amp RV can use any 30-amp setup; check its manual. |
The ratings and approximate capacities are published by Airstream Support; the page does not show a publication date. Actual appliance use and RV circuit limits affect what can run at the same time.

How to hook up RV shore power
This is a general sequence, not a substitute for model-specific instructions. Keep the owner’s manual and the instructions for any tester or electrical management system at hand; use the order specified for your RV.
- Check the equipment and receptacle. Confirm the RV service rating and pedestal receptacle. Inspect the shore cord, plug, connector pins and receptacle for damage. Do not use a cord with cut, cracked or worn insulation, or energize damaged or bent pins.
- Switch breakers off as directed. Turn off the pedestal breaker and the RV main breaker if the owner’s manual instructs you to do so. The exact sequence can differ by RV.
- Test the supply if using a monitor or tester. Connect and interpret a ground monitor, pedestal tester or electrical management system according to its own instructions. Do not proceed if it reports reverse polarity, an open ground or another wiring fault.
- Connect the shore cord. Use the correctly rated cord and seat its connections fully at the RV and pedestal. Use an adapter only if it is appropriate for the receptacles and explicitly permitted by the RV’s manual. Never defeat the grounding connection or use a device that reconfigures incoming AC power.
- Restore power in the manual’s sequence. If a protection device reports a fault or a breaker trips, disconnect and ask campground maintenance or a qualified technician for help. Do not repeatedly reset a tripping breaker.
For example, Grand Design’s 2025 owner manual directs owners to turn off the load-center main breaker, extend the cord, connect it, and then turn on the main breaker. Its procedure is specific to its instructions; use the manual for your RV rather than applying that sequence universally. The same manual warns against adapters that reconfigure incoming AC power or interrupt continuity of the grounding connection. See the Grand Design RV owner manuals.

When to stop and get help
- Reverse polarity or open ground: Do not connect if a monitor reports either fault. Jayco’s owner manual says, “If the ground monitor indicates ‘reverse polarity’ or an ‘open ground’, DO NOT connect the power cord.” See Jayco owner manuals.
- Damaged cord insulation: Replace a cord with cut, cracked or worn insulation rather than using it.
- Damaged connector pins: Do not energize a plug with damaged or bent pins. Seek qualified help if the problem cannot be safely resolved.
- Uncertain receptacle or wiring: Do not guess whether the outlet is suitable. Ask campground maintenance or a qualified RV technician.
- Repeated breaker trips or protection-device faults: Stop and have the cause investigated instead of repeatedly resetting the breaker or bypassing protection.
Choosing cords, adapters and protection equipment
Match equipment to the RV’s service rating, inlet, cord style and owner-manual requirements. A correctly rated shore cord is essential; a compatible dogbone adapter is for a genuine receptacle mismatch, not for creating more power or changing the incoming supply. A tester or ground monitor can help identify wiring faults, but use it as instructed.
A surge protector and an electrical management system are related protection products, but they are not interchangeable by default and do not prevent every electrical problem. Check what the device does, its rating and connection type, and whether the RV manual permits it. Go RVing’s 2025 guide names Progressive Industries EMS-PT30X for 30-amp RVs and EMS-PT50X for 50-amp RVs as examples; those mentions are not a universal recommendation. Verify current specifications and compatibility before choosing any model. See Go RVing’s electrical hookup guide.
