Yes—some electric fireplace inserts let you switch the heater off while keeping the flame effect on. Choose only a model whose manufacturer or owner manual confirms that exact operation, then check that its firebox and required opening dimensions fit your installation.
Confirm the flame-only setting on the exact model
“Electric fireplace” does not automatically mean the flame can run without heat. Look for an explicit flame-only or heater-off setting in the product specifications or manual. The intended setup is the flame effect with the heater switched off—not a heater running while somehow producing no heat.
For example, Real Flame says its 49-inch model can turn off the heat for heatless flames (manufacturer product page). Touchstone describes its Sideline 28, model 80028, as supporting flame operation without heat (manufacturer product page). Treat these as examples of a documented feature, not as a ranking or endorsement.
Check the installation type before measuring
An “insert,” a recessed fireplace, and a wall-mounted fireplace may suit different locations. Confirm whether the model is designed for an existing fireplace opening, a framed wall opening, surface mounting, or more than one installation type. Follow the exact model’s installation instructions; do not assume a wall-mounted unit is also suitable for an existing masonry fireplace.

- Heat & Glo describes its electric insert as fitting a wood-fireplace opening with a surround kit or a framed opening, and lists 25-, 30-, and 35-inch widths (manufacturer product page).
Measure the opening and compare the right dimensions
Measure the opening at the points and in the manner required by the installation instructions. Compare those measurements with the manufacturer’s firebox dimensions and, when provided, rough-opening dimensions. Overall exterior size alone does not tell you whether the unit will fit inside the opening or what space the installation requires.
Touchstone publishes all three measurements for the Sideline 28. Its listed exterior dimensions are 28 inches wide by 16.5 inches high by 5 inches deep; its firebox is 23 by 15.4 by 4.75 inches; and its rough opening is 23.25 by 15.75 by 5.25 inches. These are Touchstone’s specifications, not independent measurements. Check the current product instructions and confirm the specific installation configuration before cutting or modifying a wall.

Real Flame lists its 49-inch model at 49 inches long by 5.25 inches wide by 21.25 inches high, with a firebox measuring 46.5 by 4.75 by 18.25 inches. The VividFlame 4199 firebox is listed at 23.5 inches long by 8.75 inches wide by 20 inches high. These manufacturer-listed dimensions use the product pages’ stated orientation; verify how the manufacturer defines each dimension before comparing it with your opening.

- Controls: Note whether flame and heat have separate controls, and whether operation uses physical controls, a remote, or an app. Real Flame lists a remote and log set among the VividFlame 4199’s included items.
- Electrical connection: Confirm whether the chosen installation is plug-in or hardwired, and follow the manufacturer’s electrical and installation requirements.
- Warranty and safety information: Review the exact model’s warranty and documented safety or certification details rather than assuming they are the same across a brand or product category.
- Room coverage and heat ratings: Treat published figures as manufacturer claims for the named model. Touchstone lists 1,300 watts, 3,750 BTU, and claimed coverage of 300 square feet for the Sideline 28; the coverage figure is not a guarantee for a particular room and is not a measure of flame-only energy use.
What flame-only operation does—and does not—tell you
A model with a confirmed heater-off setting can provide the flame visual without operating its heater. That feature alone does not establish how much electricity flame-only mode uses or what it will cost to run. The cited product information does not provide a comparable independent measurement for flame-only energy use.
Likewise, manufacturer specifications do not establish comparative flame realism, noise, reliability, or value. Choose based on documented fit, installation requirements, controls, warranty, safety information, and the appearance you prefer; do not treat a feature list as independent performance testing.

Use the exact manual for installation and operation
Manuals can describe separate flame and heat controls, but instructions for one insert do not necessarily apply to another. An owner manual for an unspecified firebox describes visual-effect operation with flame only and warns that its unit is not designed for heat-only operation (owner manual). That guidance is not a substitute for the manual for the model you buy. Confirm the heater-off control, permitted installation, electrical connection, clearances, and opening requirements in that unit’s documentation.
