No. The available material does not establish the products in a current Spruce roundup or confirm that its six listed products were tested by The Spruce. A 2023 Spruce roundup appears only as a search-indexed excerpt in a third-party PDF compilation, which is not enough to verify a current list. Good Housekeeping, Bob Vila, and Apartment Therapy have separate product coverage; their picks should not be presented as Spruce’s.
Choose a cleaner by the upholstery care code
Check the furniture’s care tag before applying a liquid cleaner. The code indicates which cleaning approach is permitted:
- W: Water-based cleaning is permitted.
- S: Use a solvent-based cleaner, not a water-based one.
- WS: Either water-based or solvent-based cleaning is permitted.
- X: Vacuum or seek professional cleaning; do not use a liquid cleaner.
An unsuitable cleaner can discolor fabric, leave water marks, or cause damage. Follow the product label as well as the upholstery tag.

Match the format to the mess

- Attachments: Check whether the tools suit the upholstery areas you need to reach.

Clean fabric upholstery more safely
- Read the upholstery care code and the cleaner’s label. If the tag says X, stick to vacuuming or professional cleaning.
- Vacuum loose dirt before applying a treatment.
- Test the cleaner on a hidden area and check for discoloration or other visible changes before treating a prominent spot.
- Apply only as directed, and avoid over-wetting the fabric.
- After using a machine, clean and dry its tanks and tools according to the instructions.
What other publishers’ testing can—and cannot—tell you
Good Housekeeping’s Home Care & Cleaning Lab reported testing 11 products and appliances for upholstery cleaning in 2026. Its evaluation covered stain removal on common upholstery fabrics, potential fabric damage, usability, rinsing, directions, and label warnings. For machines, it also considered attachments, formulas, runtime, capacity, maintenance, and storage, and collected consumer feedback from home use. This describes Good Housekeeping’s methodology, not The Spruce’s.

In a roundup updated October 1, 2026, Good Housekeeping named the Bissell Little Green its top pick. Its testing found that it lifted stains without damaging fabrics or carpet and described it as easy to use, while noting that it is somewhat loud. Good Housekeeping lists it for W and WS fabrics. That finding is Good Housekeeping’s, not a verified Spruce result.
Bob Vila’s 2025 hands-on roundup named the Hoover CleanSlate Plus its favorite, citing its compact design and cleaning power. The same roundup included Woolite INSTAclean Stain Remover as a value pick; it reported visible stain lifting but said results were not uniform across the stain and dabbing or scrubbing might be needed.
