Choose a specific plywood coffee table plan before buying materials. Its cut list determines the plywood thickness and sheet size, while its dimensions, joinery, and edge treatment determine what else you need. There is no single standard plywood coffee table size or build.
Choose a design that fits your room
Start with the space and the way you expect to use the table: check the available footprint, desired height, and whether you want a shelf or other storage. Then pick a plan whose dimensions and layout suit those needs. The examples below are individual project specifications, not universal furniture or ergonomic standards.

The two plans with published dimensions give useful examples of different footprints and heights; neither establishes a recommended size for every room. For the other two, consult the plan itself for dimensions before cutting. If you work in metric, convert the measurements in your chosen plan consistently and check the cut list against your conversions. One woodworking forum user asked for plans written in centimeters, but that individual question does not establish general demand or the availability of metric versions: forum discussion.
Buy plywood to match the cut list
Several cited Kreg designs specify 3/4-inch plywood, but that does not make 3/4 inch a universal requirement. The modern plan uses it for a top, shelves, risers, and a side panel; the other Kreg coffee table plan calls for a 3/4-inch by 48-inch by 48-inch sheet and specifies oak veneer plywood for the top. The round plan also describes a 3/4-inch build. By contrast, the super-simple plan pairs a quarter sheet of plywood with dimensional lumber.

Use the selected plan’s exact cut list to determine thickness, sheet dimensions, grade, and veneer. Do not substitute one plan’s material list or cuts for another’s. If you change the design or material, the cited plans do not establish how that change affects strength.
Follow the plan’s joinery and hardware
Pocket-hole joinery is a documented option in the cited Kreg plans, not a requirement for every plywood table. The modern plan specifies 1 1/4-inch coarse pocket-hole screws, glue, and optional brad nails. Kreg’s other coffee table plan lists a pocket-hole jig and hardware. The super-simple plan also uses pocket holes. Check the instructions for your chosen design to confirm the screw type, quantity, and assembly sequence; the available plans do not provide comparative strength testing for different joinery methods.

Decide how to handle exposed edges
Plywood edges can be part of the look or covered for a more finished appearance. The modern and other Kreg coffee table plans list iron-on veneer edge banding as an option for exposed edges. If you choose to use it, follow the plan and the banding manufacturer’s directions. Where the plan leaves edges visible, make sure that choice suits the appearance you want.
Sand and apply finish carefully
Kreg’s modern plan calls for sanding to 220 grit and cautions against sanding through the plywood veneers or edge banding. It recommends following the finish manufacturer’s safety and application instructions. Its suggestion of General Finishes Arm-R-Seal applies to that particular high-use project; the plan notes that the finish has an ambering effect. Choose a finish based on the appearance you want and follow its label rather than treating one product as necessary for every table.

Make a plan-specific materials and tools checklist
Before buying or cutting, gather the requirements from the plan you selected. Use this checklist to catch mismatches without assuming every build needs the same supplies:
- Materials: plywood in the specified thickness, sheet size, grade, and veneer; any dimensional lumber, shelf parts, or store-bought legs listed in the plan.
- Joinery: the specified pocket-hole jig and screws if the plan uses them, plus glue or optional brad nails only where its instructions call for them.
- Edge treatment: iron-on veneer edge banding if you want to cover exposed edges and the plan supports that option.
- Finishing: sandpaper and a finish suited to the intended appearance, with application and safety instructions from its manufacturer.
- Cut list and layout: the chosen plan’s dimensions and cuts, checked against the full sheet before cutting.
Kreg describes its super-simple project as one a person can build even without prior furniture-building experience. That is Kreg Tool’s statement about its own plan, not a guarantee that every builder or plywood design will be equally easy. Use the instructions for the exact project you choose.
