For patterned leaves, metallic colour or bold architectural shapes, three houseplant groups stand out: prayer plants, rex begonias and Alocasias. Their looks—and their care needs—differ, so choose for both the foliage you love and the conditions your room can provide.

What houseplants have unusual leaves?

“Unusual” can mean intricate markings, a silvery sheen, strong veins, an unexpected outline or leaves that visibly change position. These plants offer distinct effects rather than one shared look:

  • Prayer plants: patterned foliage, with many types folding their leaves upward at night.
  • Rex begonias: colourful, often metallic-looking leaves grown chiefly for their foliage.
  • Alocasias: large, sculptural leaves with striking shapes and prominent veins.

Which plants have striking patterned leaves?

Prayer plants: fine patterns and daily movement

The common names “calathea” and “prayer plant” cover related foliage plants in the genera Goeppertia, Ctenanthe and Stromanthe. Their leaves may be rounded, oval or paddle-shaped, with markings ranging from peacock-like patterning to a network effect. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) names peacock calathea (Goeppertia makoyana), rattlesnake plant (G. insignis), network plant (G. kegeljanii) and G. orbifolia among its examples. RHS: How to grow calatheas.

Many plants in the Marantaceae family show nyctinasty: their leaves fold upward at night and open again in daylight. It is a distinctive feature to look for, not a guarantee for every plant sold as a prayer plant.

  • 🌿 Rare and Variegated Indoor Foliage Plants – This collection features some of the most searched philodendron houseplants, known for white striping, pink variegation, glossy leaves, and velvety textures.
  • 🌸 Variegation and Color Develop with Maturity – As young starter plants, some philodendrons may arrive with limited striping or color; with proper light, care, and time, foliage patterns become more pronounced as plants mature.
  • 🏡 Easy Care Indoor Tropical Houseplants – Philodendrons are widely purchased as low maintenance houseplants that thrive indoors with bright indirect light, making them suitable for beginners, busy households, and plant collectors.

RHS guidance recommends bright indirect light, warm and humid conditions, and evenly moist compost during active growth. Avoid waterlogging, especially in winter; direct summer sun can scorch the leaves.

Rex begonia: metallic colour and asymmetrical leaves

Rex begonias are grown mainly for their brightly coloured foliage rather than their small, pale flowers. In its profile of Begonia rex, the RHS describes large, asymmetrical leaves with metallic-green and silver areas above and reddish undersides. RHS: Begonia rex (R), king begonia.

How do Alocasias make a statement indoors?

Alocasias bring scale and silhouette: their leaves can be glossy, heart-shaped or arrow-shaped, and green, purple or silver, often with prominent veins. Some species reach about 1.5 m (5 ft), while compact choices are also available, so check the particular plant’s expected size before choosing a spot.

Alocasia care and household safety

For active growth, provide bright indirect light and temperatures above 16°C (60°F). RHS guidance recommends humidity from spring to autumn, protection from draughts and direct summer sun, and cooler, drier conditions in winter, when plants may become dormant. Adjust watering to that seasonal slowdown rather than keeping the compost as moist as during active growth.

How to choose the right foliage plant for your room

Plant Visual effect Room and care fit Space and household note
Prayer plant Intricate patterns; many types move their leaves between night and day. Bright indirect light; warm, humid conditions; evenly moist compost during active growth, with care not to overwater in winter. Leaf shape and pattern vary among types. Night-folding is common in the family, not universal.
Rex begonia Multicoloured foliage, including metallic and silver areas in Begonia rex. Bright filtered or indirect light; shade from hot sun; well-drained compost. Choose it for foliage colour; follow winter watering guidance for rhizomatous types.
Alocasia Large sculptural leaves, unusual outlines and prominent veins. Bright indirect light, warmth and humidity during active growth; cooler, drier conditions may suit winter dormancy. Sizes range from compact choices to species around 1.5 m (5 ft). Keep away from children and pets; use gloves when handling.

The figures and care advice here reflect RHS descriptions; individual cultivars and room conditions can differ. Pick a plant whose light, warmth and seasonal watering needs you can meet, as well as whose leaves you want to see every day.
