The hall is closed during construction, with major works beginning in early 2026 and reopening anticipated in early 2028. No exact reopening date has been announced in the official project material reviewed.
What the redevelopment includes
This is a major refurbishment of the existing heritage-listed hall, not a replacement building. The plan combines essential structural work and safety and compliance upgrades with changes intended to improve the experience for audiences, performers and staff. The listed benefits are design intentions; they have not yet been assessed in a reopened venue.
- Access: improved access from street level and a remodelled auditorium entrance, including changes to lifts and stairs.
- Auditorium: replacement seating intended to improve comfort and sightlines while retaining the hall’s acoustic qualities.
- Stage and production: a new automated stage lift and upgraded production facilities.
- Backstage and staff facilities: refurbished backstage areas, offices and rehearsal spaces, supporting WASO’s planned permanent home at the hall.
- Foyers and public areas: refurbished foyer facilities, new bars and event spaces.
- Forecourts: redesigned, landscaped northern and southern forecourts.
The overall design is led by WITH Architecture Studio and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). The project page describes the aim as retaining the building’s distinctive architecture and acoustics while making its entrances and facilities more usable. When will Perth Concert Hall reopen?
The hall closed to the public in December 2024. Preliminary structural work began in 2025; the main works contract was awarded in December 2025, and the project page says major works began in early 2026. The City of Perth has said reopening is anticipated in early 2028. That is a projected timeframe, not a confirmed opening day. City of Perth update, 20 May 2025 · Current project page

How much is the project costing, and who is funding it?
The current WA Government project page gives the total redevelopment allocation as $150.3 million and lists the following contributions:
| Funder | Published contribution |
|---|---|
| Government of Western Australia | $127.3 million |
| Woodside Energy, through the Resources Community Investment Initiative | $30 million |
| Australian Government | $12 million |
| City of Perth | $4 million |
Earlier announcements used different State contribution figures. The 2024–25 Arts and Culture Trust annual report lists $104.3 million from the State, alongside the same $30 million Woodside, $12 million Commonwealth and $4 million City contributions. Earlier government announcements described the State contribution as $134.3 million and listed the federal and City amounts. These are distinct published breakdowns; the documents reviewed do not explain the accounting or budget changes behind the differing State attributions. The current project page’s figures are used above. Arts and Culture Trust Annual Report 2024–25 · WA Government joint media statement, 26 September 2024
Why the hall is being refurbished
Perth Concert Hall opened to the public on 26 January 1973. Designed by Jeffrey Howlett and Don Bailey, it is described by the WA Government as Australia’s first concert hall built after World War II. The redevelopment is intended to extend the life of the heritage-listed building while addressing structural, safety, access and operational needs. WA Government joint media statement, 26 September 2024
The official project page frames the aim as elevating the experience for artists, audiences and the community. That is a statement of intent, not a demonstrated outcome: comfort, sightlines, accessibility and acoustic performance can only be judged after the work is complete and the hall is in use.

What happens to WASO performances during construction?
WASO performances are being relocated while the hall is under construction. The official sources reviewed do not provide a consolidated list of alternative venues or a complete future performance schedule. WASO’s planned permanent home at the refurbished hall includes co-located administrative and orchestral staff, rehearsal spaces and upgraded production facilities.
