A perovskite solar-cell interface design has reached reported power-conversion efficiency of up to 26% and more than 1,000 hours of stability testing. Those figures were reported under demanding laboratory conditions—85 °C, 85% relative humidity, and one-sun maximum-power-point tracking—not as the service life of a commercial solar panel. The result is a materials-engineering advance, not proof of decades of outdoor performance.
What did the perovskite solar-cell study achieve?
A 2025 commentary by Giulia Grancini of the University of Pavia and Carolin M. Sutter-Fella of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory summarizes research published in Nature Synthesis. It reports efficiencies of up to 26% and lifetimes exceeding 1,000 hours under damp-heat conditions of 85 °C and 85% relative humidity, with the cells operating under one sun at their maximum power point. Read the LBNL-hosted commentary.
Here, “lifetime” refers to performance during a defined stability test. It is not a measurement of how many years a panel would operate on a roof or at a solar farm. Accelerated laboratory hours cannot be converted into field years without a validated relationship between the test and real-world exposure.
How does the interface design work?
The approach targets the boundary between the three-dimensional (3D) perovskite absorber and a two-dimensional (2D) perovskite capping layer. The researchers insert an ultrathin layer of PCBM, a fullerene derivative, between them. The commentary describes PCBM as a molecular sieve that helps regulate reactions at the interface and the movement of ions. See the layer and process description.

- Works Indoors & Outdoors - Generates power from ambient indoor lighting, window light, and sunlight
- Perovskite Solar Technology - Advanced photovoltaic material designed to capture more usable energy in low-light environments than traditional silicon panels.
- Built for Energy Harvesting - Ideal for powering or extending battery life in low-power electronics and IoT devices.
- Ultra-Thin & Lightweight - Compact form factor makes integration easy, even in space-constrained projects.
- Easy to Integrate - Simple wire output design for fast prototyping and product development.
The 2D cap is reported to be less than 10 nanometres thick and to contain only the n=1 and n=2 phases. The layers are formed by spin-coating and then annealed at 100 °C. These are research-fabrication details, not instructions for making a consumer solar panel.
The researchers contrast this controlled structure with conventional deposition that can yield uneven, discontinuous caps containing multiple layer phases. They report that the engineered interface remained intact after the described stability tests. They propose that controlling the interface helps limit unwanted reactions and ion transport; that explanation does not independently establish long-term field durability. The commentary discusses the interface and open mechanism questions.

How long do perovskite solar cells last?
There is no service-life figure established here for commercial perovskite panels. The specific result is more than 1,000 hours in the reported 85 °C, 85% relative-humidity, one-sun maximum-power-point test. It shows that this laboratory cell tolerated a substantial accelerated test, but does not tell a building owner how many years a product would last outdoors.
Heat, moisture, sunlight, and continuous operation all affect stability, and a laboratory test represents only its stated conditions. The commentary calls for further long-term real-world testing and scale-up before the result can answer questions about outdoor service life. See the authors’ discussion of testing and scale-up.

How does this result compare with another 1,000-hour report?
A 2026 Northwestern University report describes a different device: a perovskite-organic tandem cell. That study reports independently measured efficiency of 26.4% and 91% retention after 1,000 hours of continuous illumination at 65 °C. It is a separate architecture and experiment, not another measurement of the PCBM molecular-sieve design. The Northwestern report also identifies module scale-up and outdoor exposure testing as remaining needs. Read the Northwestern report.
Stability claims are meaningful only alongside their test details. When comparing studies, check the device architecture, encapsulation status, temperature and humidity, illumination and spectrum, whether the cell was operated at maximum power, test duration and retained efficiency, and whether the result came from a small cell or a scaled module. The two reports above differ in architecture and test conditions, so their numbers should not be combined into a single performance claim.

What does the result mean for construction and solar projects?
For construction professionals, the finding is evidence of progress in a material system that still faces durability and manufacturing challenges. It may inform future solar-technology development, but the study does not establish a product specification, a warranty life, or performance for a building-integrated installation. The reported cell is a laboratory research result; the commentary identifies scale-up and real-world validation as outstanding work.
