The “Pendulum Cradle Woodworking Plan” is listed as a full-size infant-cradle project, with paper and downloadable PDF options from WoodworkersWorkshop. Its listing names ash and hardboard, includes building and finishing guidance, and specifies a 31-by-17-inch mattress space. A separate Woodcraft listing gives different overall dimensions, so use the measurements attached to the plan you actually obtain—not a mix of the two listings. Most importantly, a woodworking plan is not proof that a finished cradle meets current infant-sleep safety requirements.
What the Pendulum Cradle plan includes
WoodworkersWorkshop lists the full-size Pendulum Cradle Woodworking Plan in paper and PDF formats. Its listing describes building instructions, finishing guidance, a full materials list supplied with the plan, and a tool list. The named materials are ash and hardboard. Listed equipment includes a table saw, clamps, drill press, bandsaw, belt sander and router, along with common hand tools.
The plan is a woodworking project, not a ready-made cradle. The listing’s tool and material descriptions help indicate the shop setup involved, but they are not an independent assessment of the design’s structural performance or suitability for infant sleep.
Dimensions: keep each listing’s measurements together
WoodworkersWorkshop specifies a cradle-bottom mattress space of 31 inches long by 17 inches wide. It also lists the upright support-frame foot as 24¼ inches long and 35¾ inches tall. These are the measurements in that retailer’s listing; confirm dimensions against the actual plan and intended mattress before cutting stock.

Woodcraft’s separate paper-plan listing gives overall dimensions of 36 inches high by 24 inches wide by 35 inches long and says materials are not included. Those figures describe that listing and should not be silently combined with WoodworkersWorkshop’s mattress-space or support-frame measurements.
How the build is organized
A related Woodcraft heirloom pendulum cradle article illustrates the kinds of operations involved in a build: making templates, shaping curved feet and cradle ends, cutting frame joints, assembling spindle sides and a bottom, fitting pendulum dowels, and joining the cradle to its stand. The dowels need to pivot without binding for the pendulum mechanism to move as intended.

That article is historical construction guidance, not evidence that a cradle built from it—or from a commercially listed plan—passes current infant-product tests. A smooth-moving pendulum and sound-looking joinery do not establish safety compliance.
Full-size infant cradle and doll cradle are different projects
Do not confuse the full-size infant-cradle plan with doll-scale versions derived from it. Woodcraft’s doll-cradle project is scaled for a doll around 15 inches long. WOOD Magazine’s downloadable doll cradle plan is sized for dolls around 18 inches long and is listed at 24 inches long by 17 inches tall. These are toy projects, not infant sleep products.

Infant sleep use requires more than following a plan
If the finished cradle is intended for an infant to sleep in, U.S. requirements and safe-sleep guidance apply. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) places bassinets and cradles under 16 C.F.R. part 1218 and the applicable Commission-accepted ASTM F2194 standard. CPSC business guidance identifies ASTM F2194-25 for products manufactured or imported on or after February 21, 2026, and states that enforcement discretion for the revised standard ended June 30, 2026. A plan listing does not document testing or certification, and following its steps alone does not establish compliance. See the CPSC bassinet and cradle business guidance.
CPSC guidance says the sleep surface, in its resting non-rocking position, is intended to be no more than 10 degrees from horizontal. That angle is only one part of the requirements: the standard also addresses matters including stability, openings, structural integrity, mattress and side-height requirements, fasteners, and pinching or shearing hazards. Meeting the angle alone does not make a cradle safe or compliant. The federal regulation, 16 C.F.R. part 1218, contains the applicable requirements.

Keep the rocking mechanism separate from the sleep-surface rule. CPSC consumer guidance says products inclined more than 10 degrees—including rockers, gliders, soothers and swings—should never be used for infant sleep. See CPSC Safe Sleep guidance.
The risks are not merely theoretical: in a September 30, 2013 announcement, CPSC reported 426 bassinet and cradle incidents, including 132 fatalities, from November 2007 through March 2013. Those are historical incident figures, not a current annual rate. The announcement described the regulation’s purpose as reducing risks including falls, entrapment, and structural or design problems. For a woodworking project, choose based on plan format, what dimensions are actually specified, and whether materials are supplied. For infant sleep, none of those conveniences substitutes for applicable testing and compliance evidence.
