It is a coating that covers and whitens discoloured grout—not a cleaner. Selleys says to clean the tiles and grout thoroughly and let them dry before applying it.
What product did Chloe Cowper use?
Cowper demonstrated Selleys Grout Stain Whitener in a before-and-after post reported by PerthNow on October 8, 2024. She called it the “holy grail product” for grout. The story said it was sold at Bunnings and reported a price of $15.19 at that time; that is not a current price or confirmation of today’s stock.
The demonstration’s distinction matters: Cowper said the grout had been properly cleaned before she applied the product. Replying to a commenter, she wrote, “Correct, It’s a grout stain, we did do a proper clean prior to this x.” The whitener addresses the appearance of stains and discolouration after cleaning; it should not be treated as a substitute for removing grime.
What the whitener does—and what it does not
Selleys describes the product as a way to cover and whiten grout stains associated with mould growth, dirt worked into the grout, makeup or hair dye. The manufacturer says it forms a barrier intended to make it harder for mould spores to take hold or stains to penetrate, and that it contains a fungicide to help prevent mould regrowth. These are Selleys’ product claims, not a guarantee that grout will remain stain-free or mould-free.

The product can change grey or other coloured grout to white. That makes it a cosmetic treatment for grout that is sound but discoloured; it does not repair damaged grout or remove the underlying cause of moisture or mould. If grout is crumbling or a leak is feeding recurring mould, a surface coating does not address that problem.
Where Selleys says it can be used
Selleys specifies a 280 mL, white, water-based tube for interior use. Listed locations include bathrooms, kitchens and laundries; the intended material is grout.

- Do not use on: unglazed or porous tile and stone.
- Use caution with: intricate tile patterns or grooves, where removing residue can be difficult.
- Expect more than one coat when needed: Selleys says heavily stained or coloured grout may require two initial applications.
How to apply it
Follow the product label and Selleys’ instructions for the surface being treated. The manufacturer’s listed process is:
- Clean the tiled area and grout thoroughly, then make sure they are dry.
- Wear gloves, an apron and old clothing, as Selleys recommends.
- Press the foam applicator against the grout and apply even pressure while following each grout line.
- Leave the product to dry for at least 30 minutes. Test by wiping with a damp cloth; if it is not ready, allow more drying time, up to two hours.
- Remove excess with a lint-free damp cloth or sponge, wiping diagonally across the grout rather than along the lines. Reapply where too little product was used or too much was wiped away.
- Rinse the sponge and replace the tube lid. Keep water off the treated area for at least five hours.
Selleys advises avoiding harsh or abrasive cleaning on treated grout unless preparing it for reapplication. Uncured product can be cleaned with water; cured product can be softened with methylated spirits.

How long did Cowper say it lasted?
PerthNow quoted Cowper saying, “Once it’s dry it doesn’t come off. May need to redo some areas every six or so months.” That is her account of her experience, not a manufacturer durability guarantee or independently verified service-life estimate. The newspaper also reported that her post had more than 75,000 views; that figure is reported engagement, not an audited measure of product performance.
