What is Jiaxing Train Station?
Jiaxing Train Station is a railway project designed by MAD Architects that combines a reconstructed historic station building with a new facility. MAD describes the new station’s entry and exit platforms, waiting halls, and major transport and commercial functions as almost entirely underground. The arrangement connects with sunken municipal roads and is the basis for the project’s “train station in the forest” design concept.
The project’s defining contrast is spatial: a restored historic building remains above ground, while much of the contemporary station program sits below it. That pairing makes the site’s past visible without requiring the new station to follow the conventional form of a large above-ground concourse.
How the station’s history shaped the project
From railway junction to reconstruction
MAD says the original Jiaxing station was built in 1907 and opened in 1909 as an important junction on the Shanghai–Hangzhou Railway Line. The firm says it worked with scholars, consultants, and heritage-architecture experts to gather information and produce a 1:1 reconstruction intended to recover the earlier building’s appearance. Later changes and the 1921 connection
New Atlas reports that the station was destroyed and rebuilt in 1937, redesigned in 1995, and considered too small for modern requirements in 2019, when MAD was commissioned for a replacement. The publication also describes the site as an important transport link associated with the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party in 1921. These details are reported by New Atlas rather than established here as independently verified official records. New Atlas’s 2024 report on the project gives that chronology and historical context.
How the new station is organized
Major functions below ground
MAD says the entry and exit platforms, waiting halls, and major transport and commercial functions are almost entirely taken underground. The transport system also connects to sunken municipal roads. Rather than treating the station as a single prominent building above ground, the design places much of its operational program beneath the site and retains the historic reconstruction as a visible architectural element.

The reconstructed building and its materials
New Atlas reports that the reconstructed historic building uses 21,000 bricks made from mud sourced from a nearby lake, and that the new building sits in front of the main, largely underground facility. The figure refers specifically to this project’s reconstruction; it is not a general construction benchmark.

Jiaxing’s design connects railway heritage with a contemporary underground layout, but the available project descriptions do not establish measured outcomes such as passenger capacity, travel-time improvements, cost, energy use, emissions, or public-space performance. Current train services, visitor access, and operational status are also not verified by the cited accounts. The “past and future” idea is therefore best understood as an architectural reading of the reconstructed building beside the largely underground hub, not as evidence of quantified transport or environmental benefits.
