For a yard or garden with confirmed pocket gophers, begin by finding fresh activity and trapping in the active main tunnel. Use buried mesh to protect a specific tree or bed, not as a way to clear a whole property. Larger farms may need an integrated approach that includes baiting or habitat changes. Repellents and sonic devices are not reliable controls, and no single method works everywhere.
First, confirm the animal and locate fresh activity
Gopher mounds can be mistaken for those made by moles or other burrowing animals. Identify the animal before choosing a control method; the steps here are for pocket gophers. Look for recently disturbed soil and an active tunnel. Traps must intercept an active burrow, and bait must be placed where the animal will encounter it. A probe can help locate the main run before setting a trap or placing bait. UC IPM notes that bait placed in a backfilled tunnel will not be found: UC IPM pocket gopher guidance.
Which control method fits your site?
| Method | Best fit | Limits to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Trapping | Lawns, gardens, small orchards, and other smaller areas | Requires locating the active main tunnel and setting a suitable trap correctly; less practical across broad areas. |
| Baiting | One option in integrated control, particularly for larger populations or operations | Placement matters. Follow the current product label and local rules; bait in an unsuitable or backfilled tunnel may be ineffective. |
| Buried mesh or hardware cloth | Protecting selected trees, beds, or other high-value plants | Protects only the enclosed planting; installation can be difficult and expensive. |
| Habitat or crop management | Farms and managed landscapes where cropping or food availability can be changed | Depends on the site and production goals; not a universal fix for a home yard. |
| Flood irrigation | Certain irrigated field settings | Not a general yard treatment; it is inapplicable to sprinkler-only settings and may drive activity to field edges or cause mortality. |
| Sonic, scent, and other repellents | Not recommended as a reliable primary method | University guidance reports no proven effectiveness for pocket gophers. |
How to trap pocket gophers
Find the main tunnel
Use a probe to locate the main run rather than placing a trap randomly at a surface mound. The aim is to intercept a tunnel the animal is actively using. Follow the trap maker’s instructions for opening and setting the tunnel, and check the setup regularly.
Choose a purpose-built trap
UC Cooperative Extension describes pincher-style traps such as Macabee and Gophinator, and box-style traps such as Black Box and Black Hole. Trap performance depends on size and placement, and setting traps effectively takes practice. Trapping is described as proven or effective for smaller areas by university extension sources, but it is not a guaranteed one-step removal method: placement and follow-up matter. See UC IPM and UC Cooperative Extension pocket gopher guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Covers the Areas That Matter Most: Ideal for supporting protection for up to 120 sq ft, ideal for lawns, garden beds, landscaped sections, and plant root zones where maintaining a smooth surface matters most.
- Easy to Use: Simple to apply with no complicated setup, an easy addition to your regular lawn and garden care routine. Helps reduce hardworking repairs and costly replanting.
- Long-Lasting Support — Up to 2 Months: Each application lasts up to 60 days, offering ongoing yard support so you don’t have to constantly think about underground activity or frequent reapplications.
- Natural & Safe: Made with natural ingredients, penetrates deep into the soil where animals burrow and help manage mole activity.
- Helps Keep Your Lawn Looking Neat: Designed to keep moles, voles, gophers, armadillos and groundhogs away, helping limit new tunnels and raised ridges, supports lawn that feels smoother, more even, and better maintained.
Protect a specific bed or tree with buried mesh
If the priority is one small, valuable planting, buried mesh or hardware cloth can act as a physical barrier. University of Nevada, Reno Extension gives an example for small plantings: 1/4- to 1/2-inch mesh buried at least 18 inches. Treat that as a site-specific example, not a universal installation specification: barrier depth and arrangement can vary with the target, soil, and installation. Check local recommendations before construction. Mesh protects the planting; it does not remove gophers from the property, and broader installation can be difficult or costly. See University of Nevada, Reno Extension’s pocket gopher control strategies.
What changes on a farm or larger property?
Broad areas can require an integrated approach rather than relying on trapping alone. University of Nevada, Reno Extension describes combining monitoring, baiting, habitat modification, and irrigation practices where applicable. Habitat changes depend on the site and production goals, so they are not a ready-made yard-scale solution. Flood irrigation is relevant only in certain irrigated field settings; it is not a substitute for control in a typical yard.

- Long Outdoor Use: Designed for outdoor placement, each repellent works for up to 60 days. Place several pieces across active areas to help cover lawns, gardens, orchards, and storage areas.
- Easy To Place: No complex setup required. Simply open the package and place the product near soft ground, garden edges, wood piles, garage corners, sheds, or places where snake or mole activity is often noticed.
- Wide Outdoor Application: Suitable for backyards, lawns, vegetable gardens, flower beds, fruit tree areas, barns, sheds, garages, campsites, and fence lines.
The agricultural impact can be substantial: University of Nevada, Reno Extension reports forage-yield reductions of 21–49% in hay meadows and alfalfa fields. It also reports a University of Nebraska study in which hay yield increased 16% three months after control for a fibrous-rooted alfalfa variety. These are agricultural figures, not expected outcomes for home gardens. Predators alone usually do not keep pocket gopher populations below damaging levels, according to the same Extension source.
Why repellents and folk remedies are poor bets
UC Statewide IPM Program states: “Neither chemical nor mechanical repellents have been found effective against pocket gophers.” Its home guidance likewise says repellents have not proven effective for protecting plantings. UC Cooperative Extension material also does not support frightening devices or remedies such as chewing gum and laxatives as proven controls. Do not rely on sonic devices, scents, castor-based products, or folk remedies as the main response.

Use bait and other pesticide products cautiously
Baiting is an option in some integrated-control situations, but effectiveness depends on placing it in an active tunnel where the animal will find it. Use only a product registered for the intended use, follow its current label exactly, and check applicable local rules. Do not improvise toxicant use or treat flooding a yard as a general control measure; the cited guidance discusses flooding mainly in applicable agricultural irrigation settings. Product availability and requirements can vary by location.
