Oregon Metro describes it as an odor absorber and mild abrasive, suitable for tasks such as scrubbing sinks, pots and some stains. The right method depends on the surface or fabric, so check its care instructions and test a hidden area first.
What baking soda can—and cannot—do
Baking soda’s mild abrasion can help loosen some grime, while its odor-absorbing properties make it useful for selected odor-control tasks. Oregon Metro describes it as a mild abrasive that absorbs odors: Oregon Metro’s green-cleaning guidance.
It is not a disinfectant. Cleaning professional Chris Willatt, quoted by AARP, says: “There’s a light cleaning action and it deodorizes, but it doesn’t actually kill germs in the way that disinfectants do.” Use a product labeled for disinfection when that is the goal, and follow its label directions: AARP’s discussion of baking soda cleaning.
What you need
- Plain baking soda.
- Water for making a paste or dampening oven residue.
- A damp cloth; for oven cleaning, a nonscratch sponge or soft brush may help if the appliance instructions allow it.
Before using baking soda on a surface or appliance, check its manufacturer’s instructions. Its mild abrasive quality does not make it suitable for every finish.

How to clean an oven with baking soda
Check the oven manual first, especially for guidance on self-cleaning systems, finishes, liquids and abrasive cleaners. Keep any paste away from heating elements and wiring, and rinse the oven after cleaning.
For ordinary grime
- Mix equal parts salt and baking soda with enough water to form a paste, following Oregon Metro’s oven-cleaning method.
- Apply the paste to oven walls, avoiding heating elements and wiring. Let it stand briefly.
- Wipe with a damp cloth or a suitable brush, then rinse the cleaned area well.
For heavier buildup
Oregon Metro suggests covering the soiled area with baking soda, dampening it and keeping it moist overnight. The next day, scoop out the loosened grime and rinse thoroughly. Use this only if the oven maker’s instructions permit the method and the surface can tolerate it.

As a separate manufacturer method, 3M Scotch-Brite recommends mixing 1/2 cup baking soda with 3 tablespoons water, spreading the paste on non-heating surfaces and leaving it overnight. Remove it with a damp nonscratch sponge; the instructions mention vinegar and water as needed. This is 3M’s recipe, not a universal method for every oven: 3M Scotch-Brite’s oven-cleaning instructions.
How to use baking soda in laundry
For a stain
- Mix equal parts baking soda and water into a paste.
- Test it on a hidden area first. Avoid delicate fabrics, and check the garment care label and washer manual.
- Use it as a spot pretreatment, then wash according to the garment’s care tag.
These steps follow Whirlpool’s guidance; they are not a universal recommendation for every fabric or washing machine: Whirlpool’s laundry guidance.

For odor control
Whirlpool suggests adding about a half cup of baking soda to a wash load with detergent. Check your washer manual and garment care instructions before trying it; the amount is Whirlpool guidance, not a dosage for every machine or textile.

Oregon Metro lists baking soda as a mild abrasive for scrubbing sinks, pots and stains. Apply it cautiously and test a hidden spot first. Avoid using it on delicate, coated or polished finishes unless the maker says it is suitable. Rinse the area after cleaning.

When to choose another method
- You need disinfection: Baking soda does not kill germs in the way a disinfectant does; use a suitable product labeled for that purpose.
- The surface or fabric is delicate: Skip the abrasive paste unless its manufacturer specifically allows it.
- The appliance manual rules out abrasives or liquids: Follow the manual rather than a general cleaning recipe.
- You are considering washing soda instead: Oregon Metro notes that washing soda is more caustic than baking soda and calls for gloves and thorough rinsing. Do not treat the two as interchangeable without following the relevant product and surface instructions.
