For everyday household repairs, start with a claw hammer, Phillips and flathead screwdrivers, and a tape measure. Add pliers, an adjustable wrench, and a utility knife as your jobs expand. Buy for the work you actually do: a practical handful of comfortable, useful tools is a better starting point than a kit chosen for its piece count.
What tools do I need around the house?
A basic household toolkit can cover many small fixes and installations with four essentials. Popular Mechanics’ 2025 starter-tool guide recommends a claw hammer, Phillips and flathead screwdrivers, and a tape measure.
- Claw hammer: Drives nails and pulls them back out. Popular Mechanics names the Estwing E3-16S 16 oz hammer as an example; it is a cited product, not an independent recommendation here.
- Phillips and flathead screwdrivers: Keep both types available for common household screws. The guide names Milwaukee’s 48-22-2710 10-piece screwdriver set as one example.
- Tape measure: Useful for checking dimensions before hanging, placing, or assembling something. The guide names a Stanley Fatmax 25-foot tape measure as an example.
Product names identify examples from the 2025 guide, not a guarantee of current specifications or availability. Check the current version and fit for your needs before buying.
Which tools are useful additions?
Pliers, an adjustable wrench, and a utility knife broaden what a small toolkit can handle. Pliers can grip or hold; an adjustable wrench fits a range of nuts and fittings; a utility knife is useful for cutting suitable packaging and materials. Match each tool to the task, and use the right size and type rather than forcing a poor fit.

Wrench reach matters. In a 2026 review of a household kit, a Popular Mechanics reviewer reported using its adjustable wrench on a sink supply line and noted that a longer wrench offered more leverage and could fit larger fittings than the short wrench supplied in that kit. That is an observation about the reviewed kit, not a universal specification for adjustable wrenches. For plumbing work, use a wrench that fits the fitting securely; do not apply force in a way that could damage it.
Should I buy a tool set or individual tools?
A compact preassembled kit can be convenient for occasional, light household tasks, but the quality of kits varies, and the tools within one kit may not all be equally useful. Popular Mechanics’ 2025 household-tool guide and its 2026 tool-set guide support evaluating contents and intended use rather than relying on the advertised piece count.

| Approach | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Compact household kit | Light, occasional jobs where convenience and one place to store tools matter | Whether it includes the essentials you will use, whether the tools feel suitable for the work, and whether any wrench has enough reach for likely fittings |
| Individual tools | People who want to choose specific tools for recurring tasks or improve on a kit’s weak or missing items | Comfort, build quality, correct tool type and size, and how each tool fits the jobs you expect to do |
| Purpose-built kit | Specialty work such as automotive repair or bicycle maintenance | Whether the kit is designed for that work; a generic household assortment may not contain the needed tools |
Count useful tools, not just pieces. A large set may include small consumables or filler that add to the number without helping with your expected jobs. The 2026 Popular Mechanics review also describes using a kit’s hammer, level, and tape measure to hang pictures, its bit driver and screwdrivers for household adjustments and furniture assembly, and its pliers and utility knife for other practical tasks. Those are the reviewer’s reported uses of that particular kit.

How to choose tools for your jobs
- List the work you expect to do. For occasional picture hanging or basic assembly, prioritize the core tools. Add a wrench, pliers, or utility knife when your likely tasks call for them.
- Inspect the contents. For a kit, check that it contains the tools and sizes you need. Treat piece count as a secondary detail.
- Consider frequency and comfort. Tools used regularly are worth selecting individually if a kit’s fit or quality is not right for the job.
- Account for access and leverage. A short wrench may be easy to store, while a longer one can provide more leverage and reach larger fittings. Choose for the actual fitting and working space.
- Separate household work from specialty work. For automotive or bicycle maintenance, look for tools intended for that specialty instead of assuming a general household set will be sufficient.
