The outer breakwaters at Ocean Reef Marina were completed in August 2023. The planned eight-lane coastal pool is not confirmed open: the current project milestones page anticipates it opening in 2028. Earlier official projections expected the pool sooner, in 2026 or 2027.
What has been completed at Ocean Reef Marina?
The Western Australian Government announced completion of the marina’s outer breakwaters on 22 August 2023. The northern wall is 670 metres long and the southern wall is 1.2 kilometres long; both rise up to 8 metres above sea level. Construction used 1.25 million tonnes of rock, according to the Government announcement.
The breakwaters mark completion of a major marine construction phase. They protect the marina and provide the setting for the later public-recreation build-out. At the time, Premier Roger Cook said: “Earlier this year the breakwaters were completed in a significant milestone for the transformation of the Ocean Reef Marina.” That statement referred to the breakwaters, not the pool.
When is the coastal pool expected to open?
The current Ocean Reef Marina project milestones page lists an eight-lane coastal pool with an anticipated opening in 2028. This is a projected schedule, not a confirmed opening date; no public opening day is established in the project information cited here.

Why do older sources give different years?
Ocean Reef Marina schedules have changed over time. The dates below are expectations published at the time, not confirmed opening dates.

What is planned around the pool?
The pool is part of a wider public recreation precinct, rather than a standalone construction project. Government materials describe a planned family beach and public spaces, alongside features such as a promenade, play areas and public amenities. The December 2023 government announcement described a 150-metre family beach with shark-net protection.

Ocean Reef Marina’s March 2026 coastal pool fact sheet says water-quality monitoring has been conducted at the marina since December 2020 under an approved Marine Construction Monitoring and Management Plan developed in consultation with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation. That describes a monitoring process; it does not guarantee future water quality or establish when the pool will open. Read the fact sheet.
