That was the reported order-to-readiness period—not 99 days of on-site construction. The project was presented with rooftop solar and rainwater collection, but the published details do not establish that it could operate independently of utilities in every season or location.
What is VMD?
Vivienda Mínima de Descanso (VMD) is a compact prefabricated home designed by Taller Escape and Studioroca. ArchDaily’s 2019 project record lists its area as 30 m² (323 sq ft) and identifies the project with Mexico City. The design was presented as a weekend residence: a small footprint intended to bring occupants closer to nature while limiting the demands of a second home.
Lead architect Carlos Acosta described the question behind the project as: “It got us asking, ‘what would you do with less?’” ArchDaily’s project record documents the design and its prefabrication approach.
What does “off the grid” mean here?
New Atlas reported rooftop solar panels, solar water heaters and rainwater collection. Those features suggest ways the home could reduce reliance on conventional services, but the 2019 coverage does not give solar capacity, battery or inverter details, water-storage volume, expected consumption, or measured operating results. “Off the grid” should therefore be read as a description of the reported systems, not proof of year-round energy or water independence.

The reporting also mentioned remote-controlled smart lighting and video surveillance, and an optional incinerator toilet. These are details reported at the time, not verified current specifications. New Atlas’s contemporaneous account is available at New Atlas.
How was the home built and delivered?
New Atlas described a container-based structure with internal reinforcement, external cladding, and thermal and acoustic insulation. ArchDaily reported factory prefabrication, followed by transport to the site; placing the home requires a large trailer and crane. That logistics requirement makes site access and placement part of the project, not an afterthought.

The 99-day figure in the 2019 coverage referred to readiness from order, not the time required to assemble the home at the site. ArchDaily estimated on-site installation at about one week. These are historical reported timelines, not a current schedule or a delivery guarantee.
What layout and versions were reported?
The coverage describes one- and two-bedroom versions. New Atlas’s account of the one-bedroom interior lists a bedroom, bathroom, open living area and kitchen, with large windows, sliding glass doors, furniture and a timber terrace. The sources do not provide a complete side-by-side specification, confirm the floor area of each variant, or establish which features were included in every version.

What did VMD cost in the 2019 coverage?
New Atlas reported a starting price of MXN 950,000 for the one-bedroom model, equivalent to about US$49,100 at the time of publication. This is a historical figure, not a current quote. The reviewed sources do not state a comparable price for the two-bedroom version.
What should a prospective buyer confirm?
The 2019 project coverage establishes neither current sales availability nor present-day prices, delivery times, site-specific approvals or operating performance. Before treating a similar home as a buildable project, obtain current written answers from the studios or seller on the details that affect cost, feasibility and habitability:
