What are coffee balls?
CoffeeB is a single-serve coffee system launched by Migros subsidiary Delica in 2022. Each ball is roasted, ground coffee pressed into a compact shape and covered with a thin protective layer. Migros says the layer is plant-based, with alginate from algae as a main component, and helps protect aroma and keep the ball stable during brewing. The company describes the brewing technology as patented and specific to CoffeeB. Migros’s overview of CoffeeB explains the design.
That makes the ball different from a capsule, but it is still a proprietary single-serve format: the ball is not a universal replacement for capsules in existing machines.
How do CoffeeB balls work, and do they fit existing pod machines?
You put a CoffeeB ball into a compatible CoffeeB brewer, which is designed around the ball and its brewing process. The official material does not identify Nespresso, Keurig, or other capsule machines as compatible. If you already own a pod machine, assume you will need a separate brewer rather than trying a CoffeeB ball in it.

CoffeeB’s current site lists Globe, Horizon, and Cosmos machine models. Check the official CoffeeB site for the current product lineup and regional information.
What coffee choices and serving sizes are listed?
Migros product listings show nine-ball packages, including Café Royal Lungo and Decaffeinato. The product pages recommend 110 ml for Lungo and 40 ml for Espresso. The organic Lungo listing describes the coffee as Fairtrade certified and suitable for all CoffeeB machines. Product availability and the selection can vary, so consult current local listings rather than assuming every variety is sold in every market.

Where can you buy CoffeeB?
CoffeeB’s FAQ names the CoffeeB webshop, many Migros shops, Migros Online, Galaxus, Fust, and MediaMarkt as purchase channels. These are company-listed channels, not confirmation that a particular store has stock or that each retailer serves every country. For Luxembourg or another market beyond the listed Swiss retail context, the available sources do not establish local availability; check current local retailers or the official CoffeeB site rather than relying on a general claim.

What should you do with used coffee balls?
Migros and CoffeeB say the balls’ components are garden-compostable and that the system avoids aluminium or plastic capsules. CoffeeB says used balls break down under moist soil conditions within a few weeks; Migros’s 2022 overview described decomposition in garden compost within four weeks. These are company statements, not independent certification or a guarantee about every home composting setup. Follow local composting rules and do not assume that “compostable” means suitable for every municipal food-waste or industrial composting collection.
The official FAQ provides CoffeeB’s sustainability statements. The cited material does not supply an independent, comparative life-cycle assessment of the full system—including the brewer’s manufacture, shipping, packaging, and disposal—so the compostability of the balls alone cannot settle which system has the lowest overall impact.

Are coffee balls actually better for the environment than pods?
They eliminate the aluminium or plastic capsule itself, according to Migros and CoffeeB, and the company says the balls can be composted in garden conditions. Those are meaningful differences in the consumable and its claimed disposal route. They do not establish that CoffeeB is environmentally superior overall: a fair comparison would also need to account for the dedicated machine, its lifetime, coffee use, packaging, transport, and local end-of-life options. The reviewed sources do not provide an independent head-to-head life-cycle analysis.
Migros has also claimed an approximately 30% reduction in ecological footprint compared with fully automatic or portafilter systems, saying CoffeeB uses less coffee per cup. That is Migros’s comparison claim; the cited overview does not provide a full methodology, and it is not an independently verified result. It should not be read as a 30% reduction versus pod machines.

Migros’s 2022 overview also cited “more than 100,000 tonnes” of capsule waste worldwide per year and said “about 70%” of capsules end up in rubbish bins. Those are historical figures reported by Migros in 2022, not verified current global estimates. The company overview provides the original context.
Is CoffeeB a game-changer?
For someone who wants a single-serve routine without conventional aluminium or plastic capsules, CoffeeB offers a distinct format and a company-described garden-compostable ball. The trade-off is that it is not a drop-in change: it calls for a dedicated machine and depends on local product availability. Whether it is a better fit than another brewing method depends on current machine and coffee prices, preferred serving sizes, and the disposal options where you live; the cited sources do not establish comparative taste, speed, noise, or total cost.
What about K-Rounds?
On 14 March 2024, Migros announced a long-term partnership between Delica and Keurig Dr Pepper, granting Keurig Dr Pepper exclusive application rights to the coating technology in the United States, Mexico, and Canada for K-Rounds. The announcement describes a technology partnership; it does not establish that K-Rounds are CoffeeB-branded balls or confirm their current consumer availability.
